Fetterman and Feinstein absences leave
Senate Democrats without outright majority

Original Article

Democrats have lacked an outright majority this week in the Senate as a number of temporary absences complicate their ability to confirm Joe Biden's nominees and give Republicans an easier time sending legislation to the president's desk. Four senators have missed all of their votes this week, three Democrats and one Republican, underscoring just how tenuous the 51-49 Democratic control of the upper chamber is. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has left Washington to deal with a “health matter,” according to a spokesperson, and it's not clear when she'll be back for Senate votes. “She hopes to return to Washington soon,”

Comments:

Dems are dropping like flies.

I hope this means that Schumer won’t bring up anything controversial for a vote.

Even as we have knocked McConnell quite a bit, he has made life for Schumer very miserable this week.

It doesn't matter. The majority of the Republicans are uniparty members. If they got power, they'd just squander it anyway.

California's reparations task force held its second in-person meeting on Saturday, where members of the public were allowed to give comments as the state legislature considers whether to implement a reparations program for descendants of Black slaves, and what that program would look like. Hundreds of passionate people spoke in the two meetings on Friday and Saturday, voicing their support for cash payments to Black Americans, or grants of land or other compensation. Some called for a renewed Freedmen's Bureau — referring to the Reconstruction-era federal agency Congress tasked with providing food, medical aid, clothing and other needs to newly freed

At least for some, the famous line, “Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt” (often attributed to Mark Twain), perfectly underscores the dilemma of the Democratic Party’s leaders approaching the 2024 presidential election. Many of them seem to be in flat-out denial of the widespread fear — or reality — that they don’t have a viable ticket. A recent article in Politico gave a deliberate test drive to some of the concerns regarding the highly flawed incumbent ticket of President Biden and Vice President Harris. It read, in part: “High-level Democrats are rallying to President Biden’s reelection, not because they

Congress and the president are expected to nullify a Washington, D.C., law for the first time in more than 30 years, and District leaders are expressing frustration over what they say is a major step backwards for statehood. President Joe Biden said Thursday he won't veto a measure that would block D.C. from enacting a controversial criminal code reform bill if it lands on his desk. Beltway insiders tell us that they’ve both lawyered up and that the two sides are hashing out the details of the split. During the 2016 elections, Kellyanne served first as a campaign advisor to candidate Trump and then as his campaign manager, while her husband co-founded the Lincoln Project with the express purpose of keeping Trump out of the White House. The greatest blunder President Vladimir Putin may have made so far in Ukraine is giving the West the impression that Russia could lose the war. The early Russian strike on Kyiv stumbled and failed. The Russian behemoth seemed not nearly as formidable as it had been made out to be. The war suddenly appeared as a face-off between a mass of disenchanted Russian incompetents and supercharged, savvy Ukrainian patriots. Senator John Fetterman's health remains under scrutiny as he continues his treatment in the hospital and there are serious questions about what Democrats might do if the senator chooses to resign. Fetterman's team has made no indication that he will resign and Pennsylvania's Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro has said there is no "contingency plan" if he does resign. Shapiro would be tasked with selecting someone to fill Fetterman's seat in the event but there would then have to be a special election in 2024. That would take place at the same time as Democratic Senator Bob Casey is seeking reelection

As soon as this month, air quality officials in the San Francisco Bay Area are expected to adopt the nation’s first rules phasing out new gas-fueled water heaters and furnaces in homes and businesses starting in 2027. When they do, it will mark a significant step in the effort to curb health-damaging and planet-warming emissions from buildings. The California Air Resources Board adopted plans last year to phase out sales of gas water heaters and furnaces statewide by 2030 but isn't going to consider setting rules to do so until 2025.
