Burt Bacharach, the velvety smooth composer and orchestrator whose partnership with lyricist Hal David brought swanky sophistication to pop music in the 1960s, has died. He was 94.
Bacharach died Wednesday of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles , publicist Tina Brausam announced.
Bacharach composed the music for some 50 top 10 hits, including six that reached No. 1. Among his most celebrated efforts were “Walk on By,” “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” “What’s New Pussycat?” “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” “Alfie,” “This Guy’s in Love With You” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?”

Some or us who were blessred to live in his time can still sing at least bits of his songs if not the whole thing. He wrote singable songs that stuck in our heads….

Almost forgot: Dionne Warwick. A voice made for his songs. Or vice versa.

I agree, #1, We were fortunate to have Burt's Music to listen to. Maybe it would be a good time to play "What the World Needs Now is Love" to Say Good-by to Burt. May He Rest in Peace.

Have to admit, When I'm listening to Talk radio and the news sometimes
I turn it off and listen to some of the Bacharach classics just to regain some calmness.
RIP

Am I the only one who remembers his father - - Bert Bacharach - - Bert with an "e" - - who was a newspaper entertainment columnist?
And let's not forget - - the late Hal David - - who punched up Burt's syncopated music with memorable and catchy lyrics.
RIP - - Blue Seas Music - - Bacharach & David.

Almost every time i get caught in a rain shower i start humming “Raindrops keep falling on my head”. And I see Pail Newman and Katherine Ross on that old bicycle.

I just had time ro read this article. It is really very good, capturing the man as well as the composer. At the end he wants to be remembered for being a good father. I like that. No matter what else I did in life, my kids were my best, my most important work...

Cotton Candy music. Light, fun, airy, easy to sing along and harmonize to it. I once saw BJ Thomas open a concert for Emmy Lou Harris in Casper Wyoming. "Raindrops" was his big hit at the time and what a crowd pleaser. Yes, we remember the words - and that says a lot. I'm a bit stunned to review the list of his songs and to realize how many of them I know.

I am sorry to hear he passed away. He has left the world a better place. The theme song from Valley of the Dolls is a bit melancholy (beautifully sung by Dionne Warwick), but most of his songs were upbeat with memorable lyrics. What a contrast to the recent Grammy awards, which devolved into themes of devil worship.

I was never a big fan of his music. It was too pop culture, elevator music for me. But, I do appreciate his contributions to Planet Earth. He gave a lot of people a lot of pleasure. RIP, sir.

Loved his music. Even as an early teen, fully into pop and rock, I came to appreciate it. I bought the Close to You LP, now a collector's item (never released on CD) because I liked All Kinds of People. But the rest of the album grabbed me. Later in life in bought a Dionne Warwick double CD and my affection for Bacharach increased. RIP

#3, #6 re Dionne Warwick
I will always remember what a war buddy told me about coming out of the jungles of Vietnam, feeling exhausted and then re-entering a bit of civilization and hearing Dionne Warwick for the first time ever, her clear, beautiful voice drifting out from some guy's radio, singing "Do you know the way to San Jose?" It was like she was America itself and he had a little bit of home after a hellish experience.

#17, "Theme From Valley of the Dolls" was written by André and Dory Previn, although Burt did produce the version that Dionne released. It has his sound but is just a touch maudlin, unlike Burt's work. It's a hard thing to write a song like "A House is Not a Home" and hit that perfect sincere note, but he did!
