Several GOP members, including Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, are trying to convince House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to make the trip to Taiwan. As I reported last week, President Joe Biden told reporters that the military does not think the trip to Taiwan is a good idea, as China might retaliate against Taiwan due to the House Speaker’s visit.
“The military thinks it’s not a good idea right now … but I don’t know what the status of it is.”
Pelosi responded to Biden’s warning, saying:

Since the outcome of the 2020 presidential election became clear, there has been widespread speculation that there would be an epic electoral rematch in 2024, with the combatants being an incumbent Joe Biden versus Donald Trump attempting to channel his inner Grover Cleveland.
Yet the closer we get to our next quadrennial exercise of choosing our commander-in-chief, the more likely it appears that we may indeed see a presidential election rematch, but with a ballot matching the ones with which we cast votes in 2016, not in 2020. Hillary Clinton’s flirtations with another candidacy are becoming increasingly clear and undeniable.
I have to hand it to the Jan. 6 Committee. They’ve already proven what hacks they are, yet they just keep digging that hole deeper for themselves and in so doing, they keep revealing how empty their case is.
Let’s be frank — the whole point of the Jan. 6 effort is to try to do all they can to take down Donald Trump, because they’re afraid he’ll run again and win in 2024. So, if they wanted to be honest about it, what they’re doing is an effort to “interfere” in the 2024 election ahead of time.

The Associated Press is reporting that there’s a winner in the Maryland Republican gubernatorial primary, to fill the seat of GOP Governor Larry Hogan, who is term-limited.

Dan Cox, a far-right state legislator endorsed by former President Donald Trump, won the Republican primary for Maryland governor on Tuesday, defeating a moderate rival backed by outgoing Gov. Larry Hogan.
Cox will face the winner of the Democratic primary in the November general election. The top Democratic candidates include former U.S. Labor Secretary and Democratic Party chair Tom Perez, bestselling author Wes Moore and state Comptroller Peter Franchot.
In case you missed it, or as we might say via text or on social media ICYMI, California Governor Gavin Newsom recently tried his hand at damage control. As you may recall, over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, Newsom ran TV ads in Florida bad-mouthing the policies of the Sunshine State’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. One ad began with, “It’s Independence Day, so let’s talk about what’s going on in America.” From there, the ad went on to promote Newsom’s approach to (chuckle) freedom.

Fomer Kentucky swim star Riley Gaines and tennis legend Martina Navratilova both sounded off Saturday on the University of Pennsylvania’s decision to nominate trans swimmer Lia Thomas for the “NCAA Woman of the Year” prize. But it sounds like Don Lemon is throwing a bit of a fit over the concept of being an objective unbiased journalist — something he doesn’t exactly know how to be. He doesn’t think it’s right to be “fair” to Republicans, because he believes that Republicans are such a danger to society.

I recently wrote a column about why I believed Trump should not run in 2024. I was wrong. I allowed my distaste for Trump’s personality to override his virtues, which are considerable. Some people want Trump without his vices. I was among them -- until yesterday, when I watched and listened to Tom Klingenstein’s speech titled “Trump’s virtues.” It was masterful and shamed me that I did not make the distinction between Trump's character and his virtues, the former being deeply flawed, the latter being almost perfect. I need to man up in my defense of the former President's virtues.
