Barrons has an interesting article on an increase in bank auto repossession rates connected to defaults [see here]. Essentially, used car prices have surged significantly and the timeline seems to indicate the temporary covid-19 stimulus spending had a lot to do with the increase in demand. According to data assembled by CoPilot, used cars are currently priced approximately 10,000 higher than they would be without any pandemic related influence, supply side or demand side. Banks and financial institutions loaned money into the climbing market price. However, the artificially inflated car prices now create a bubble where the liability on the books is significantly higher

One problem is it's impossible to buy a new car that is just basic transportation. They are all loaded up with extra bells & whistles that inflate the price and are not really needed. The days of getting a Chevy Biscayne or Ford Fairmont are long gone.

There's zero chance that the banks and financial institutions will take any kind of a haircut over this. America is a place where profits are privatized but losses are public, and thus the responsibility of the taxpayer. Compassionate George certainly set the precedent there with the housing bubble he created.

Good time to head to a repo auction. Will be a buyers' market if you know what you're doing.

Shades of the housing bubble in 2008. All car commercials now say order your car. Before, one could go to a car dealership and pick a car that one liked and drive away. A friend of mine just got a new Mazda. He went to the dealership, and they had no new cars let alone what he was looking for. So, the dealer went online and found the Mazda my friend was looking for. It was still at the Mazda factory being built and could be shipped when completed. My friend made a deal for his old vehicle, and he drove that until the new one came in. Then he would trade it in. A month later, the new vehicle arrived. This is not about a chip shortage anymore. It's a raw material backlog to make the cars. My son works for BMW, and last week 1500 cars arrived. Almost all were already sold.

Many used cars are reliable, much simpler than the new models, and take regular gas. Makes them solid gold.

A poll by Public Religion Research Institute, a lefty lobbying group, found that Lia Thomas has had an impact on how Americans view allowing transgenders competing with women athletes. Americans don't like it. PRRI's polled found that Will Thomas changing his name to Lia and winning all the women's swimming trophies turned people off. Four years ago, 50% supported allowing men who say they are women competing in women's sports. Now that Americans have seen this firsthand, only 36% do. In fact, a 61% majority of Americans oppose letting men who say they are women to compete in women's sports. Hey, in a democracy, you have to ban it, right?

So now you have the "chest", if you will, and the key to the lock is in the public domain. Whatever is in there and whatever it shows -- it will soon be everywhere.

OPEC expects to increase oil output in 2023 by nearly 1 million barrels per day due to rising global demand. “In 2023, expectations for healthy global economic growth amidst improvements in geopolitical developments, combined with expected improvements in the containment of COVID-19 in China, are expected to boost consumption of oil,” the organization said in its monthly report released on July 12. Year over year, world oil demand is anticipated to rise by 2.7 million barrels per day (bpd), and overall demand is projected to reach 103 million bpd, (snip) Non-OPEC supply is expected to increase by 1.76 million bpd in 2023, with OPEC having to chip in an additional 940,000 barrels daily.

Asked to look back at the pandemic and assess public health recommendations aimed at limiting Covid-19 spread, only about half of Americans now think masks and vaccines have been very effective or extremely effective. That's the finding of a new Pew Research survey of more than 10,000 adults, which provides insights into Americans' thinking about many aspects of the pandemic. Only 48% think "wearing masks around other people indoors" has been extremely or very effective; 23% give masks a lukewarm "somewhat effective" grade. Defying two years of public health preaching, 28% say they're either "not too" or "not at all effective."

The Brittney Griner story has been one which tears at us from two sides. When we hear about an American being detained in a foreign country for offenses which are considered minor here in the U.S., we often become sympathetic, depending on the infraction, of course. During a cold snap in the winter of 2021, however, wind turbines froze and many Texans found themselves without electricity.
