A “professional booster” with an alleged penchant for shoplifting at Manhattan retailers notched what could be her 100th bust over the weekend—and was released without bail yet again on Sunday.
Michelle McKelley, 42, was arrested late Saturday for allegedly pocketing $125 worth of goods from a CVS in Lower Manhattan, and then was freed under the state’s soft-on-crime criminal justice reforms. Prosecutors said in Manhattan Criminal Court Sunday that McKelley has failed to appear in court 27 times on her multitude of past arrests—and has five other pending cases.(Snip)McKelley, who described herself to cops as a “professional booster,” was last cut loose Thursday

Over ninety per cent of failed asylum seekers in 2020 were not deported by the UK Home Office, analysis conducted by the Oxford Migration Observatory has found. The dismal record of the Conservative government to take back control of the nation’s borders has been demonstrated once again, with 91 per cent of migrants refused asylum in the year in which the UK left the European Union were left free to remain in the country. According to figures complied by the Oxford Migration Observatory, provided to The Guardian newspaper, showed that of the 3,632 migrants blocked from asylum, only 314 were actually removed from the country.

The United States—long a beacon to reproductive rights activists in Latin America—will now start to resemble those countries without Roe’s guarantee of a right to legally access abortion, say campaigners. For activists in places such as El Salvador, where abortion is entirely banned, and Venezuela, where there exists on the statute an exception to save the life of a woman though in practice is equally criminal, the decades-long success of campaigners in the US was often an inspiration. For women in Argentina, where “Green Wave” activists succeeded in their own landmark victory to secure legal abortion in late 2020, there was support from counterparts in the US

Former President Donald Trump said the new name for the “Fake News” media would be “Corrupt News” at a rally in Mendon, Illinois, on Saturday evening. Trump was talking about how he dubbed the January 6 Select Committee the “unselect committee” when he introduced his new nickname for the corporate press. “Unselect Committee. Do you like that name? The unselect. I came up with that one,” Trump said. “Of course every time I say that they say, ‘no, actually 100 years ago, somebody else came up with that term.’ I think I came up with it.” Trump said the “Fake News” moniker is “not strong enough” to describe the media

San Antonio—There were 27 patients scheduled to receive abortions Friday at Alamo Women’s Reproductive Services in San Antonio.
Some were already waiting outside when the clinic opened at 9 a.m., doing their best to ignore a group of protesters at the parking lot entrance, shouting at them through a loudspeaker. “You don’t have to go in!” the activists pleaded with the women. “They murder babies!”
The clinic’s longtime owner, Dr. Alan Braid, was back in his office when his daughter, Andrea Gallegos, the executive administrator, ducked in. “It’s out. The decision’s out,” she said. “Full overturn.” Braid cursed. Then he began to tear up.

Pfizer announced Saturday that tweaking its COVID-19 vaccine to better target the omicron variant is safe and works—just days before regulators debate whether to offer Americans updated booster shots this fall. The vaccines currently used in the U.S. still offer strong protection against severe COVID-19 disease and death—especially if people have gotten a booster dose. But those vaccines target the original coronavirus strain and their effectiveness against any infection dropped markedly when the super-contagious omicron mutant emerged.(Snip)Moderna recently announced similar results from tests of its combination shot, what scientists call a “bivalent” vaccine. The studies weren’t designed to track how well updated boosters prevented

Washington—Up to 40,000 Army National Guard soldiers across the country—or about 13% of the force—have not yet gotten the mandated COVID-19 vaccine, and as the deadline for shots looms, at least 14,000 of them have flatly refused and could be forced out of the service. Guard soldiers have until Thursday to get the vaccine. According to data obtained by The Associated Press, between 20% to 30% of the Guard soldiers in six states are not vaccinated, and more than 10% in 43 other states still need shots. Guard leaders say states are doing all they can to encourage soldiers to get vaccinated by the time limit.

Instagram has a new idea for how to determine kids’ ages online—direct the children to videotape themselves, upload the content, and then the company will deploy facial scanning technology. The Meta-owned social platform is partnering with tech company Yoti to test how the scanning tech can be used to verify children. “After you take a video selfie, we share the image with Yoti, and nothing else,” Instagram said on its blog. “Yoti’s technology estimates your age based on your facial features and shares that estimate with us. Meta and Yoti then delete the image.”(Snip)Instagram insists its new tech will not do facial recognition.
