A California woman who received a couch from a stranger online for free made the discovery of a lifetime when she later found $36,000 in cash tucked away inside. (snip) The woman later learned the family was giving away the furniture due to the recent passing of a loved one, according to the report. (snip) Stashed underneath the cushion was $36,000 in cash, Umodu told KABC-TV. The California woman notified the family, offering to return the sum, who then rewarded her generosity. The previous owners gave Umodu $2,200, KABC reported.

Returning dirty money to drug dealers? If she didn't want it she should have found a charity.

My thoughts exactly, #1. Generosity? More likely fear about what would happen if the drug dealers found out she bought the couch.

I'm not as cynical as the first 2 posters. I think we all might be surprised how many people have cash stashed "buried in the backyard in a coffee can". If the family knew the dead relative was a drug dealer, don't you think they would have checked out everything they were giving away? I'm just thinking that the reward wasn't enough. Seems like it should have been at least the standard 15% tip (which seems to have migrated to a 20% tip these days).

My former husband's grandparents didn't trust banks(memories of the Depression). The had a small home. The family found lots of money in various places in the house. In furniture. Under the loose stair.

Does she have to pay the tax to California on the original $36000 or just the $2200 tip?

It isn't that unusual for people to keep a cash stash in their houses. I know my grandmother did, and so did my mother. Years ago, I lived through a major blizzard in the northeast, and the first thing the stores did was refuse to take personal checks - they only accepted cash. Stores now accept credit cards, but what happens in the event of a massive failure (or sabotage) of the electronic banking system? What happens if there's a massive, days-long power failure? Will ATMs work? Will banks even open? Cash will be the only option between you and starvation.

Re #1, Baloney. Some old person who died probably didn't trust banks. An honest person, how refreshing to read about.

The article says it had belonged to a loved one. Why do some cynical minds immediately kneejerk to drugs? As for comments on the Depression, my parents were young during the Depression. They were born around the turn of the century. That was the generation that may have stopped trusting banks. Better to not trust government.

A number of Tampa Bay Rays players decided not to wear rainbow-colored logos on their uniforms as part of the team's annual 'Pride Night' on Saturday. In the buildup to Saturday's MLB game against the Chicago White Sox, which also marked the franchise's annual 16th Pride Night celebration, the Rays added rainbow-colored logos to their uniforms, caps and on the right sleeve of their shirts. Nancy Pelosi went on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Tuesday to discuss Archbishop Salvatore Cordelione’s barring her from receiving Holy Communion in his diocese. Host Joe Scarborough opened the segment by calling the archbishop’s decision “disconcerting.” He noted that “Jesus never once mentioned [abortion] in the Gospels” and instead “told His disciples in Matthew 25 that we would be welcomed into the kingdom of heaven if we gave water to the thirsty, fed the hungry, clothed the poor, and brought hope to the hopeless.” Apparently, unborn children do not qualify as “the least of these.”

It’s Pride Month again, and that means corporations all over are busy virtue-signaling. In Milwaukee, the Brewers baseball team is getting into the spirit of the season by hosting Pride Night next Wednesday at their ballpark, a place whose name has taken on a new irony: American Family Field. The family fun Wednesday will include at least four drag queens, and hey, if they already strut their stuff on a routine basis in public libraries and elementary schools (and even Taco Bell), featuring them at baseball games at this late date just shows how hidebound and conservative the Grand Old Game is.

Last July, a new law went into effect in Washington state that was described as “police reform.” (snip) One of the changes put in place by the bill was a rule saying the police officers were no longer allowed to engage in high-speed chases except in very limited circumstances. In other words, if the cops see a driver doing something wrong and turn on their sirens and flashers but the motorist doesn’t pull over, there isn’t much they can do about it. To the great surprise of nobody with an IQ higher than tepid water, motorists have begun ignoring the police in increasing numbers and simply refusing to pull over.

Democrats know that they’re about to get wiped big time come the midterms, and they’re desperately searching for something that will turn the tide, whether it’s maximizing the leftist reaction to the leak from SCOTUS about the abortion case or trying to demonize Republicans over gun control. But none of that has changed the basic trend toward Republicans sweeping the field in November. The only thing they have left is the thing they’ve been planning for a while: using the Jan. 6 Committee hearings to smear the Republicans. The committee has no Republican appointees on it, so it’s already compromised. But they have been trying to go scorched earth,
