The San Francisco Examiner's editorial board wrote a scathing rebuke of the city’s archbishop, Salvatore Cordileone, after he announced he would deny Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Holy Communion, over her staunch support for abortion. (snip) In response, the liberal editorial board blasted the Catholic leader for "punishing" Pelosi, instead of "right-wing politicians" who "[vote] against health care or funding for the poor."
They defended Pelosi as a leader who has "consistently fought on the morally right side of these issues," and praised her as a role model for women.
The editorial board argued that by denying Pelosi Holy Communion, the archbishop wasn’t being loyal to Christ.

A city council in Kansas has voted to walk back a measure that mandated the removal of “In God We Trust” decals from police vehicles after constituents pushed back against the ban, KWCH reported.
At the May 2 council meeting in Haven, Councilmember Sandra Williams made a motion to nix the “In God We Trust” decals in addition to bible scripture posted to the Haven Police Department (HPD) Facebook page, the outlet previously noted. The motion resulted in a unanimous five to zero vote to remove both the decals — which officers purchased themselves months ago — and the scripture from the Facebook page.

ROME — San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone said Friday that he was “guided by the principles articulated by Pope Francis” in his decision to bar House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from receiving Holy Communion because of her aggressive abortion advocacy.
In a lengthy interview with Gloria Purvis, Archbishop Cordileone insisted that he cannot judge Ms. Pelosi’s conscience, but “to be so aggressively promoting it — that’s not what a devout Catholic does. So I believe in her heart, she feels that way, but there is a disconnect on this issue.”

ROME — Denver Archbishop Samuel Aquila released a statement Friday in support of San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone for barring Nancy Pelosi from receiving Holy Communion because of her aggressive abortion advocacy.
“I support and commend my brother bishop for making this courageous, compassionate, and necessary decision,” Archbishop Aquila said in his statement. “I know Archbishop Cordileone to be a shepherd with the heart and mind of Christ, who truly desires to lead others towards Christ’s love, mercy, and promise of eternal salvation.”

WASHINGTON, DC — Former Hillary Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann denied he was “representing a client” when he gave the CIA faulty data linking Donald Trump to Russia — and appeared “frustrated” that officials weren’t taking the information seriously, two former agency employees testified Friday.
One ex-spy — identified in court only as “Kevin P.” — recalled that he and a colleague met with Sussmann at CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., in February 2017, shortly after Trump took office.

House Democrats in the midst of dealing with the “chaos” created by new congressional maps created by a special master in New York have more reason to be unhappy today. In Florida (snip) It seemed Democrats had finally caught a break earlier this month when a judge who reviewed those maps declared the changes in the northern part of the state to be unconstitutional. (snip)
But today that decision was reversed on appeal, meaning the state will now be returning to the maps approved by Gov. DeSantis.
The 1st District Court of appeals ruled Judge Layne Smith erred when he ordered a replacement map be used for the 2022 election.

As a pro-life atheist, I’ve never been more confused.
That starts with the fact that Ocasio-Cortez is herself Catholic. Does she consider her own faith “fundamentalist”?
I presume she’d say the Church requires its members to be pro-life in their private conduct (isn’t she pro-choice?) but doesn’t require them to enshrine their beliefs in public policy. If that’s the case, I’d politely refer her to today’s news.
Beyond that, she seems to be arguing that abortion is some sort of religious right. Conservatives have accused the left for years of treating abortion as a sort of sacrament but it turns out we didn’t know the half of it.

A federal judge ruled Friday that the Biden administration’s move to end Title 42, the pandemic health policy used to quickly expel illegal migrants, must be paused, siding with Republican attorneys general who sued the administration.
“The Court agrees with the Plaintiff States that a nation-wide injunction is necessary for complete relief given the ability of immigrants crossing the border to move freely from one state to another,” Judge Robert Summerhays said in his decision.

The 64-year-old pilot of a small plane who passed out mid-flight, leaving his passenger with zero flying experience to land the aircraft in Florida earlier this month, had a “miracle” recovery after suffering a cardiac event, his surgeon said.
Kenneth Allen has been discharged from Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center and is recuperating after undergoing a nine-hour surgery to treat his torn aorta, his cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Nishant Patel, told reporters. “I mean, the story is a miracle after a miracle, really. You know, for him to be able to survive the event, an acute type-A dissection is really acute, it is hyperacute, it happens suddenly,” Patel said.
