Legal marijuana has states scrambling
to get cops roadside tests for weed-impaired drivers

States are legalizing marijuana use at a stunning pace, sparking a race to better train police officers for traffic stops and develop technologies that can help them determine if motorists are driving while high. Efforts to create a roadside breath test for marijuana, akin to portable tests for alcohol, have lagged behind state legislatures’ rush to legalize recreational use of the drug.(Snip)“We are seeing a lot of different substances causing impairment on our roads. The top two are cannabis and alcohol so it makes sense to have a device for each. Right now we only have one for alcohol and that can limit law enforcement’s ability to conduct

Comments:

A key sticking point to legalizing the intoxicant formerly known as marijuana is not ensuring the safety of our roadways for the rest of us, but rather the very American problem of how police departments and detection device vendors and insurance companies can find a way to make money on it.

How will this affect the drug testing policies in America? Right now, if a truck driver tests positive, he is terminated....no excuses...no exceptions

Don't forget that there are already DUI checkpoints which, in my opinion, are illegal, absent a probable cause for a police stop. We don't need more stops because Karen's want them. Don't forget, we now have a Homeland Security Department looking for disinformation. We can't be protected from everything, but we should be protected from government overreach.

Having spent a fair amount of time researching marijuana (as in reading the literature about it) when I was younger. it seems improbable to me that a reliable "breathalyzer" device for marijuana is possible. The problem is that, unlike alcohol, the intoxicating chemicals in marijuana are neither particularly water soluble, nor are they especially volatile. So, while I could see someone developing a spit test for marijuana, I seriously doubt the reliability of a breath test.

It's true that the metabolites of marijuana can stay in your blood for four weeks, but that doesn't mean that you would still be high after four weeks, unless you're constantly replenishing your levels. So maybe it's just better to test for impairment.

Asian-American groups are getting $20 million in the new New York State budget to fight an alarming tide of hate crimes that has shaken local communities. The money in the $220 billion annual budget deal falls short of the amount Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) organizations had sought, but it doubles last year’s funding. “The Asian American community has never been properly accounted for in the state budget,” state Sen. John Liu told the Daily News Sunday. “The need is unprecedented because everybody is painfully aware of the anti-Asian hate that has accompanied COVID,” the Queens Democrat said. The “Ghost of Kyiv” is a myth, Ukrainian officials admitted over the weekend. After several news outlets last week identified the legendary, mysterious, hero fighter pilot as a 29-year-old dad recently killed in battle with the Russians, military officials acknowledged Saturday that there was no such person. “The ghost of Kyiv is a superhero-legend, whose character was created by Ukrainians!” Ukraine’s Air Force Command wrote on Facebook.(Snip)“Hero of Ukraine Stepan Tarabalka is NOT ‘Ghost of Kyiv’ and he did NOT shoot down 40 planes,” said the country’s Air Force Command. As many as 18,000 migrants could cross the southern border daily once the Trump-era Title 42 health regulation is lifted, increasing the strain on federal officials already stretched thin trying to contain the crisis, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas admitted on Sunday. “Title 42 is a public health authority. Ukrainian officials on Saturday accused Russian forces of seizing grain in contested regions of Ukraine as fears of a looming food security crisis linger amid the ongoing war. Together, Russia and Ukraine account for nearly a third of the world’s wheat exports, and western officials fear exports could fall precipitously below pre-invasion levels. “Today, there are confirmed facts that several hundred thousand tons of grain in total were taken out of the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk regions,” Ukraine’s Deputy Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotsky told Ukrainian television on Saturday. With a global economy already battered by pandemic-related supply chain constraints, the war in Ukraine has led to even sharper
