Anyone ever heard of any of these movies? Once years ago, people would endorse a movie with gusto. You gotta see this movie. Now, one rarely hears a word about a new movie.

If people are going to the movies I don't know who they are. No one even mentions movies. I have heard of a few of them but 10 nominees for best picture is over skill and ridiculous. The last movie I saw was three years ago. And it had been a good ten years before I saw that one. Can't wait to see what the ratings are for their big ego trip of an award show. If I want to be abused I can think of more entertaining ways than watching their "we hate all conservatives but love our selves because we are special" barf show.

I haven't gotten to see "Licorice Pizza", "Coda", "The Tragedy of MacBeth", or "Drive My Car" but expect to see them shortly. I believe "Dune" is the most creative and satisfying of these nominees and should win. I can't believe Denis Villeneuve didn't get nominated for best director. What a joke. Javier Bardem should also have gotten nominated for his role in "Dune" as well. Can they do that? "Belfast" is my second choice and could be strong contender especially with Judi Dench's performance. "Nightmare Alley" is a remake of the 1947 original but it's actually a better movie than the original mainly because it doesn't soften the dark ending of the book which never would have been acceptable to censors or audiences in 1947. "The Power of the Dog" was just too slow and plodding for my taste and I left after about an hour. Bennedict Cumberbatch was spectacular, but the rest of the cast was just too understated to keep my interest. "King Richard" was a great character study by Will Smith as the driven father of Venus and Serena Williams who raised them to become sports legends despite their struggles in Compton. He may win for best actor. "Don't Look Up" was laugh-out-loud funny as a satire on the way modern idiots in government and business would certainly respond to an apocalypse. It won't win but it was worth seeing even if their attempt to equate the plot with climate change backfired on DiCaprio and company. "West Side Story" was a very skillful attempt to recapture the magic of the original, but I had a problem with the male casting. Riff and Bernardo were just not alpha male enough for me to see them as leaders of a gang. The singing and choreography were excellent and Rachel Zegler's youthful voice fit Maria better than the accomplished but older Marni Nixon that dubbed Natalie Wood in the original. They also moved some of the songs to their original Broadway points in the story which I thought fit better than the original. I don't think Dune has any real competition for Best Movie, but the "artsy" Hollywood crowd will probably pick "Power of the Dog" anyway.

The last movie that I saw in a theater was “Apollo 13”. There is mostly better stuff to stream and that’s what we. British stuff and older movies from pre-woke days. There is actually more content online that would take more than a lifetime to see all of it. I am not sure that the theater business can survive. I guess it’s still a place to take a date but the sound is so loud it’s unbearable to me and I am hard of hearing. Plus, viewing at home means the bathroom and a bottle of good bourbon are just steps away.

The last movie I watched in theater was Avengers: End Game. That was because I won a 4 ticket family pack from the local radio station. It was good but Infinity War was better. The last Oscars I watched was when fat boy Michael Moore shamed GWB about the Iraq War. Other than Woke Side Story I don't even know what these movies are about nor do I care. Since the GWB administration Hollywood has gone off the rails. With the fawning of all things Obama to the completely unhinged attitude towards PDJT to the absolute distain for anyone who didn't vote for FJB. I just don't care anymore which is sad because it used to not be that way.

Masks off? Democrats try for a pandemic pivot 15 replies
Posted by Dreadnought 2/10/2022 11:13:53 PM Post Reply
Democrats are making a U-turn on mask mandates, just in time for the midterms. It’s happening among the party’s governors, several of whom are easing up their masking rules as Covid’s Omicron wave fades. And it’s happening on the Hill, where Democrats are suddenly lining up to call for rollbacks of the nation’s most noticeable pandemic-era rule. Their pandemic pivot comes as they brace for a brutal November election in which the virus — and the culture war that’s accompanied it — is shaping up to be Democrats’ biggest blind spot.

The NY Times just published a story about how Republicans got out ahead of Democrats on the inflation issue. The story credits Rep. Elise Stefanik for noticing last year that prices were creeping up at the grocery store. Back when economists were still promising inflation would be transitory, Stefanik thought this could become a big issue for the GOP. Early last year, Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, who was then campaigning to become the No. 3 Republican in the House, began to notice that the prices of fruit, bacon, milk and eggs were creeping up.

Since early days, Democrats have pushed increasingly onerous regulations in response to the Wuhan coronavirus. Lockdowns — which the World Health Organization disavows except in very narrow, short-term circumstances and which are unsupported by science — have dragged on and on. Teachers unions kept schools closed month after month in blue states, and even children as young as 2 are being forced to mask despite no scientific support for doing so. Indeed, masking has become a political statement, to the point that Democrats routinely report wearing masks outdoors

The last national poll tracked by RCP with a single-digit gap in Biden’s job approval came last week from the Economist/YouGov tracking poll (45/49).
