Following Retirement Rumors, Republican
Whip John Thune Announces Re-Election Bid

Republican Whip John Thune of South Dakota announced Saturday that he would seek a fourth term in the Senate, following widespread rumors that he would retire from the upper chamber. Thune is seen as a potential heir to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and his retirement would have set off a power struggle at the top of the GOP conference. Members from all sides of the conference had expressed support for Thune, with Maine Sen. Susan Collins saying in December that she would be “beside [her]self” if the whip retired.

Comments:

McConnell's eventual replacement? Republicans could do a lot worse.

Who decides who gets to be leader? Who says Thune is the heir apparent? What's used to determine the ranking? Is it just a popularity contest without any Indepth review of past voting or political views? Out of nowhere, this guy named Thune is tapped as the next Senate leader. What is this based on?

They survey asked all respondents, “Thinking about the presidential election in 2024, who would you support as the Republican nominee for president?”Overall, a majority, 54 percent, of Republicans said they would support Trump. Only one other potential candidate garnered double digit support — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who saw 11 percent support. However, that still leaves him 43 points behind the former president. Most Americans today have a romanticized (and extraordinarily narrow) historical understanding of the conflict that we call the Civil War. In their imaginations, it goes something like this: With passions inflamed by a moral renaissance in the North regarding the institution of slavery in the South, the two sides decided to go to war over the issue. In the end, the evil South was righteously razed by the armies of the North, and thus, slavery was ended, and the former slaves made American citizens, as Abraham Lincoln intended.
