Claim: The decline in the labor force participation rate fell in July because fewer teenagers were working.
On Friday, after the Department of Labor’s jobs numbers showed that the labor force participation rate declined from 62.2 percent to 62.1 percent despite employers taking on 528,000 new workers, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre claimed that the decline as “about teenagers.”Doocy: "Why do you think people are continuing to drop out of the labor market?"
Jean-Pierre: "Participation actually ticked up."
Doocy: "It declined 0.1 percentage points to 62.1%, the lowest level of the year."

I work for a big box retail store.
Some of the new employees do not understand business. We are to do work that will be profitable to the employer.
Some of them think that they earn their pay by occupying space in the building for a designated length of time. And they should be pre-occupied with cell phone activities.
(If customers complain about the lack of employees/customer service/etc, I let them know that we are hiring. )

This is one of the few truths to come out of the White House. I personally have acquaintences and even relatives who have kids in their twenties and thirties still living at home and being fed by their parents. Some have even bought them cars. Gone are the good ol' days when the kid was kicked out at age 18 and told to work or starve. My own daughters worked as waitresses while going through college and have a much better work ethic today for doing so. If you have a basement-dweller who is surrounded by video games, prepare to support him for a long time.

Are these the same teenagers, and even twenty-somethings to early 30's, who probably couldn't do 5-10 pushups if they were in their 1st day of boot camp?

There aren't that many CEO jobs avaliable and that's what the darlings think they should be hired as, and with a starting salary of 6 figures, a company car and an expense account!

Although I don't disagree with with previous posters, there is something else that needs to be factored in. With the insane rise in the minimum wage, Adults have gobbled up what used to be entry-level employment for teens.

We regularly patronize a number of local diners and notice that each one is short of employees, thanks to Biden handouts. Help Wanted signs are on doors, along with the occasional apology for slow service during busy times. Since the pandemic, we've made a point of tipping well as thanks for those with the pride to work rather than wait for the next stimulus check.

#8 - That must explain those "Help Wanted" signs and banners I see posted at nearly every business I pass, not to mention the decrease in adult participation noted in the particle.
The other day I spoke to a fast food manager about "help". She told me that the labor supply is so short that the stores in the area now lean heavily on organizations that provide the handicapped work opportunities. $15 an hour, with benefits sprinkled in, hardly draws applicants.

Too high entry level wage levels leaves the unskilled out of the labor market. If the minimum wage is $10 (it's $15 in some cities) and the unskilled potential employee is only able to contribute at a $6 per hour level, then they will NOT be hired. Only people who are capable of contributing more than their pay scale will be hired, older, more experienced adults will get the jobs.
Higher minimum wage ALWAYS destroys jobs, reduces labor participation rate, always makes is harder and harder for the young to get ANY job at all.

Unfortunately true. We have a small community built-in pool with kiddie attractions in it but it’s usually closed all summer because no teens are interested in working as a life guard, soaking up rays and occasionally working. Parents say it easier to hand them money than bother driving kids to work. So parents of today are a big part of that problem

Percentage-wise, she's got a point in that teens go Back To School after the summer.
But sheer numbers-wise it is adult males who are not able to find work that pays the bills.
Too many are taking two and three part-time jobs instead.

There are help wanted signs everywhere. Covid did not kill all the workers off, and no one is infected for two years. The government is no longer paying people to not work. So where is everyone?
