Bronx businesswoman Nicole N’Diaye quickly realized New York’s 2014 legalization of medical cannabis offered few opportunities for entrepreneurs of color. “It was almost $220,000 to get the license, which no minority I know could afford,” recalled N’Diaye, a Black woman who opted for a less competitive 2018 license for cultivating hemp and CBD.(Snip)“You can imagine how hot Harlem is and how many people—nonresidents, not-harmed individuals—are interested in opening up dispensaries and other businesses in my community, because they just view us as consumers,” said Regina Smith, executive director of the Harlem Business Alliance, who is Black and a lifelong Harlem resident.

'The pandemic had started. And when we came in we really couldn't travel.' 'You know, a large part of the relationship

City workers need spellcheck—in Alphabet City of all places.
Department of Transportation contractors somehow managed to misspell “MPH”—the acronym for “miles per hour”—eight times along Avenue B last week. “What quality control do they have? This is outside a kids’ school, too,” said Corey Umstead, a 25-year-old project manager who burst out laughing when asked about the error. “Like, learn to read—OK?” The outrageous error was flagged on Twitter to the DOT on Dec. 18: “heya the new speed limit notifications on recently re-paved Avenue B read “20 MHP”(note the inversion)!!!! I kid you not.”

Cops had to step in Friday as a crowd mobbed a Brooklyn corner where the city was giving away free at-home COVID-19 tests. Tempers flared as the larger-than-expected crowd descended on Flatbush and Church avenues, one of five spots in the Big Apple where city health officials were doling out tests amid a surge in demand over the holidays and lack of supply. Photos from the scene showed members of the crowd raising their voices and pointing fingers—and cops tried to calm them.(Snip)Angry New Yorkers have already been very vocal about delays at the sites, reporting long lines and inconsistent availability

Washington—Vice President Kamala Harris tested negative Friday for the coronavirus following her close contact earlier this week with an aide who later tested positive, her office said. Harris, who is spending the holidays in Los Angeles, had tested negative Wednesday after she was told that the aide who had accompanied her throughout the day Tuesday had tested positive. Her office said she would be tested again Friday. A pair of tests—a rapid test and a more sensitive laboratory test—found no trace of the coronavirus, her office said. Harris is fully vaccinated, has received a booster COVID-19 vaccine dose and is regularly tested under White House

NASA's revolutionary James Webb Space Telescope has begun its one million mile voyage into solar orbit after successful lift off following decades of planning and delays. Jubilant scientists and engineers shouted 'Go Webb, go!' as the telescope module detached from its rocket and floated off into space far above the earth's surface.(Snip)The telescope is named after the late James E. Webb, an American government official who was the administrator of NASA from 1961 to 1968 and played an integral role in the Apollo program. NASA's decision to name the device after him was a controversial one–he has been accused of homophobia since his passing in 1992

A sex offender freed from prison earlier this year after 35 years behind bars victimized two women in under two hours in separate “terrifying” attacks in Queens last week, prosecutors said Friday.
Ralph Toro, 62, was arrested Wednesday at the Holiday Inn Express in Corona—a hotel for recently released registered sex offenders—for a midday Dec. 17 knife-point sexual assault of a 51-year-old woman in the elevator of a building at 62nd Drive and 108th St. in Forest Hills. But prosecutors revealed Friday that just an hour before Toro attacked the 51-year-old, he tried to attack a 28-year-old woman at knife-point

Memphis, in line with many major cities in the U.S., is in the throes of heightened violence—spurred by myriad factors with pandemic and non-pandemic origins. On Thursday, Memphis police reported 333 homicides, meaning the city has officially passed the grim record set in 2020 of 332 homicides. Of those 333 homicides occurring this year—292 are classified as murders. The remainder of the deaths fall into categories such as justified homicides or instances of negligent manslaughter. Within the record number includes a subset of at least 29 youth under 18-years-old killed both intentionally and through negligence. The year has included the familiar rush for explanations and solutions

New Jersey public schools could be required to infuse the history of Asian American and Pacific Islanders into their curriculum beginning with the 2022-23 school year. A bill that would make it mandatory for inclusion in K-12 curriculum statewide cleared both houses in the State Legislature this month and awaits action by Gov. Phil Murphy. New Jersey would become the second state to require it (Illinois is the first), and similar bills are being considered in eight other states.(Snip)Advocates fast-tracked the measure in response to a spike in hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders since the beginning of the pandemic.

Here we go again. With escalating live performance cancellations in the face of a surge in COVID-19 cases, the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Wednesday excerpts from Handel’s Messiah at the Kimmel Center went on despite formidable COVID-19-related challenges that had the orchestral pivoting in ways that were unthinkable two years ago. Thursday night’s performance was canceled. Orchestra spokeswoman Ashley Berke on Thursday declined to answer specific questions about the health status of performers. The orchestra is pursuing contact tracing within the group of Messiah musicians, she said, and canceled Thursday night’s performance as a precaution.
