NASA's revolutionary James Webb Space Telescope has begun its one million mile voyage into solar orbit after successful lift off following decades of planning and delays. Jubilant scientists and engineers shouted 'Go Webb, go!' as the telescope module detached from its rocket and floated off into space far above the earth's surface.(Snip)The telescope is named after the late James E. Webb, an American government official who was the administrator of NASA from 1961 to 1968 and played an integral role in the Apollo program. NASA's decision to name the device after him was a controversial one–he has been accused of homophobia since his passing in 1992

The forthcoming Harvey Milk telescope aims to probe Uranus, if that's any consolation to the lavender contingent.

This will be a big deal. With optical instruments, resolution is inversely proportional to aperture. Aperture is the diameter of the primary light gathering lens or mirror. So, this has a much larger aperture than Hubble. Hubble is a couple inches less than 8 foot aperture, the larges that could be fit into the shuttle bay. This scope has a mirror that is 21 ft in effective diameter, meaning that it will resolve things almost three times smaller than Hubble could see....or the same size, three times farther. A personal example. One nice clear night I was observing Jupiter with my person 8 inch mirror scope, and set up beside it was my exceptional quality 3 inch refractor (normal type of scope, no mirrors) . In the big scope I noted the perfectly round, tiny black shadow of one of Jupiter's moons move onto the face of Jupiter. It was amazing to see, at least for an amateur in his back yard. I wanted to see how it looked in the smaller scope. Using the same eyepieces, swapping from one scope to the other, so only the 8" mirror and 3" objective lens was different. No matter how carefully I fiddled with the focus.....the moon shadow was entirely invisible in the smaller scope in what appeared to be an excellent view of Jupiter. And when I swapped the eyepiece back to the larger instrument....pop, moon shadow, perfectly round, black and clear as a bell. THAT is what aperture does for you, a perfect demonstration that I happened to "wander into" and learned from. And the ratio of 3" to 8" is fairly similar to the ratio of Hubble to Webb, just a bit under 3X. This new scope will certainly let us see things that we absolutely could not see with the magnificent, wonderful old Hubble. Looking forward to seeing more of God's glory revealed.

Starting with a presumption that “billions” of years are involved cancels any notion of discovery! What if…just what if an all powerful God created everything that exists in 6 days around 6,000 years ago? Nothing new has ever been created in original form making original creation complete and perfect! I can have faith in that story…not the billions and billions of years! Not observable or verifiable! The Genesis account is remarkably accurate if read with an open mind to God!

New York City health officials have been using race to help decide how to allocate precious coronavirus testing resources, leaked emails from the agency show. In a conversation with reps for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, City Councilman Joe Borelli’s office said constituents on Staten Island’s South Shore were having trouble getting tested at city facilities. “Our office has been receiving calls regarding the mobile NYC H+H testing sites such as Wolfes Pond Park. It appears many are waiting with delays, and are being turned away after waiting for hours,” wrote Borelli staffer Briana Nasti in a Dec. 22 email.
