A Southern Professor Razes Hiking and
Fishing's Racist White Dominance

Original Article

If you aren’t white, you may not be able to go way outside. At least, that appears to be the belief of a North Carolina State University professor. KangJae “Jerry” Lee — of the school’s College of Natural Resources — recognizes the racism keeping you from enjoying the great outdoors. Cultural differences, he asserts, can’t explain why there aren’t more black people fishing, hunting, and hiking. Also an insufficient excuse: income disparity. The instructor laments America’s adventure/nature gap, but he’s bulls-eyed the culprit: systemic racism. Wichita’s KAKE recently jawed it up with Jerry on the lack of outdoor equity.

Comments:

Hiking and fishing are racist. Does anyone else get the feeling that the race-baiters are running out of ideas?

likely because a majority of blacks live in the historically dim socialist run inner cities where there appears to be plenty of hunting without a license.

If you lived in So Cal over the last 73 years you would know that brown people dominate pier fishing. I can totally understand non-swimmers not wanting to go out in a boat to fish when they can be successful off a pier. But where does this brown man come from, spouting off about things he has no knowledge of?

Just implement hunting & fishing and museum visiting mandates on black people. New legislation will be needed. New contracts with donor and family owned companies will be needed to implement and enforce the mandate. Salaries for those who miss work to fulfill their hunting fishing museum public service, salaries for those handling the paperwork and of course for all the implementers. It’s utopia!!! Or maybe this professor just avoids places where black people hunt and fish.

I am in a part of NYC where anyone who can cast a line can fish in the East River. On a nice day, and even on not-nice-days, those fishermen (and they are all men) are generally Hispanic and black. They fish for sport (eating what comes out of the river is a bad idea), but there they are. It's the same on any bank facing the East River--Astoria/LIC, Roosevelt Island, Harlem.

This is a stupid statement to call some activities racist or painting a white face on them. KangJa Lee sounds dumb and stupid certainly a know nothing expert.

Hmm. I guess holding a 9mm Glock sideways and dumping a magazine isn't likely to kill a deer....but then how many deer are they likely to see from their back porch on the south side of Chicago, or some other urban hell hole. If you took them out to the country ......they'd be really unhappy and want to get back to the stinkhole that they are familiar with. Judging by the number of blacks I have seen in National Parks, or on hiking trails, or along fishing streams, or out hunting....they just are not interested in the Great Outdoors, by and large. Not my fault. They could do it if they wanted. They don't want to.

Outdoor Magazine has already documented, at length, the racist framework of our public lands. The principal culprit, according to OM, is the reservation system for camping spots. According to OM, People of Color have poor planning skills and need to be allowed to make last-minute camping reservations. I am not making this up.

As you may have heard, shootings and murders are up around the country. That’s especially true in Philadelphia which had already recorded more murders this year than either New York City or Los Angeles. Progressive DA Larry Krasner’s response to that spike in violence has been denial. “We don’t have a crisis of lawlessness, we don’t have a crisis of crime, we don’t have a crisis of violence,” Krasner said earlier this month. Today, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports Krasner’s office is in chaos after 261 attorneys have decided they’d had enough of working there and quit. That’s out of an office of about 340 lawyers.

Joe Biden is set to speak today on his “new” COVID measures. But while we don’t have a scheduled time on that yet because the White House obviously has to make sure he’s physically capable before they trot him out there, we do have the details of what he’s going to say. This morning, the administration released a document that included a lot of the same. Nothing listed here strikes me as making a difference, nor does the data support the need to battle Omicron in this way. The entire thing reads like a weird mix of stolen credit and humble-bragging.

It’s long past time for that consideration, although Henry Olsen likely doesn’t disagree. He cites “progressives’ irresistible force” clashing against Joe Manchin’s immovable fiscal realism as an end stage, but that has been the clash all along. Neither side in this game of chicken appears ready to swerve, and therefore the inevitable crash will come. As could have been predicted at about the time that progressives called Manchin “racist,” but I digress slightly: It’s theoretically easy to meet Manchin’s bottom line by stripping most of the items out of the bill and focusing on one or two large programs.

In one sense, those Gospel accounts are profoundly simple. They say Jesus was the Messiah prophesized in the Hebrew Bible. As such, he performed miracles to save those needing saving. He came back from the dead. That’s the word.
