Steven Spielberg Omits Spanish Subtitles
in ‘West Side Story’

Original Article

Steven Spielberg’s long-awaited remake of Stephen Sondheim’s hit musical, West Side Story, is raising eyebrows after the director decided to release the film without subtitles to help English-speaking audiences follow along with the Spanish dialog. Spielberg and writer Tony Kushner decided to hew toward authenticity for the scenes involving the Puerto Rican characters and have them speak in Spanish in many of their scenes. However, Spielberg also decided to forego subtitles to help strictly English-speaking audiences understand what the characters are saying in the Spanish-only and mixed Spanish-English scenes, The Blast reported. Some Spanish-speaking commenters on Twitter were thrilled that Spielberg was excluding English-speakers from understanding the Spanish scenes.

Go woke, go broke!!!! Which is exactly what I hope happens to everyone involved with this movie!!! Of course, they will just blame it on "racist" old white people. Of course, back when there was no wokeness in Hollyweird, white audiences saw the original "West Side Story" in massive numbers. I really don't expect a repeat in any way this time -- especially if they are going to make it hard for English speakers to understand what is going on.

This is such a touching gesture; but how racist of them! I choose to interpret this as Anglo-supremacist. If they want it to be interpreted in some other way, they can translate it for me. Same with respect to the movie scenes -- if they care that English speakers hear what they are saying for what they intend it to mean, they can keep the English subtitles during the Spanish-language parts. Else, they are implying that we are able to understand without translation.

I don't usually watch films with subtitles anyway. When I do, I spend so much energy on reading the words so as not to miss the dialogue, I don't actually see much of the film. I might as well be listening to an English translation on radio or audio-only recording. Foreign films can be great. But I prefer ones dubbed in English even if the mouths don't sync up.

On Tuesday, November 30, a 15-year-old boy allegedly used a firearm belonging to his father to open fire on classmates, killing four students. The morning of the attack, school administrators met with the boy’s parents and showed them disturbing notes found that day indicating the boy was willing to do harm to himself and others. The boy also was caught searching for ammo on his phone just days before the shooting. But, rather than disciplining the child, the school simply gave the parents the option of pulling him out of class or leaving him in school following a meeting with school officials.

Governor Ron DeSantis proposed reinstating Florida’s State Guard—and the entire leftist establishment went mad. So mad, indeed, that Sarah Silverman, of all people, issued a “calm down” warning to MSNBC’s professional hysteric, Joy Reid. State guard forces are nothing new and nothing exciting. Indeed, even Wikipedia has an honest and temperate description of them. It explains that they are military units that operate under the aegis of the given state’s governor. Unlike a state’s national guard forces, they cannot be federalized. (You may recall how the Democrats called national guard forces to D.C. in January so there’d be someone there to witness the inauguration of our current (p)resident.)

The Bidens were on Biden time last night as they arrived at their designated spot for the National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony. They were late. They were late enough that the host of the ceremony held on The Ellipse in President’s Park south of the White House had to ask the audience to re-do their applause after the First Couple’s introduction. Last night was the 99th annual National Christmas Tree lighting. Is it too much to ask that Biden’s keepers get him outside on time to flip a switch? In three days, new coronavirus cases have nearly tripled, due to the emergence of the new variant. An outlier? Perhaps, as Republican-leaning Trafalgar has been one of the tougher polling series for Joe Biden ever since his bug-out from Afghanistan. On the other hand, this is still the worst result yet from this series, and that direction mirrors most of the rest of the polling over the last three-plus months. In yesterday’s results, Biden hit 36% job approval and still appears to be searching for a floor. More problematic is that most voters who don’t approve are passionate about it; Biden gets a disapproval rating of 59%, with 52.2% strongly disapproving. Biden doesn’t inspire much middle ground

Apparently so, and it turned out to be a moment more awkward than usual for Sleepy Joe.

In a Friday press release by the Kyodo News Service, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare warned of myocarditis and pericarditis issues related to the mRNA COVID vaccines. (snip) the Japanese health services have determined that the mRNA vaccines may cause serious heart issues, and they are now alerted and gathering data on this issue. This follows many reports from small media outlets of athletes collapsing and some even dying after being vaccinated (see links to several such reports below). These reports were dismissed by the mainstream media, the administration, big business, and other leftists as unreliable.
