Iranian media on Monday published video Monday purporting to show a military helicopter come within yards of the USS Essex, an amphibious assault ship sailing in the Gulf of Oman. The Pentagon accused Iran of "unsafe and unprofessional" conduct after the naval helicopter got within 25 yards of the Essex and circled the ship three times.(Tweet/Video) "Without getting into specifics, the crew of the Essex took the appropriate force protection measures they felt that they needed to, and they acted in accordance with international law," John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary said. The incident occurred on Nov. 11. Kirby said there was no impact on the ship’s operations.

Shouldn't the U.S. be showing pictures of an Iranian helicopter safely landed on the bottom of the Gulf of Oman?

You let an enemy helicopter get within 25 yards of the Essex, flying an attack profile like that, and didn't splash the bas+ard?
Who in the hell is running this Navy?

I'd give warnings as it approached and set a 'red line'. Shoot it down if they cross. Do the same for Russian or Chinese military hoodlums. Treat all the bad guys the same.
Be polite but carry a BIG stick, and use it too, if other people are rude. Your friends and enemies become much more tolerable.
Military aircraft in your operating zone? Snuff 'em! Then demand if the other side REALLY wants a war?

"The Pentagon accused Iran of "unsafe and unprofessional" conduct ... " contrast that response with what our President would have done, would have been one less helicopter in the Iranian Air Force

I am SO very disappointed at the above respondents who are, frankly, examples of Americans typically reacting with warlike, excess testosterone. These poor Iranians simply need a stern talking to and the public humiliation of showing the world that WE are much more civilized and knowledgeable about the law of the seas. I am sure they will refrain from such dangerous behavior going forward. Damn, its hard to hold my lips pursed speaking like this!

Knowing Biden he will just tell them to start swimming home, and turn over the keys.
I smell a deep state plan to get another war going.
They will do anything to change the news cycle when they are losing ground.

Now that Biden is CIC, I'm thinking "the appropriate force protection measures" were probably slinging Water Balloons at the Helicopter! After all, we would want to look like we wanted to actually hurt anyone!

So now it is the policy of our government to allow hostile forces to overfly our warships with impunity? What is wrong with these people?

The helo could have been carrying anything up to a Exocet, and it was well within lethal range.

Sent them a sternly worded letter ? Should have sent them a vaporized helicopter and a vaporized air base that it launched from.

With Biden as our Commander-in-Poopypants I'm actually surprised that the Essex wasn't ordered to surrender with our sailors kneeling with hands over their heads as they were boarded by the helicopter crew (both of them).

You have to wonder why the Iranian Navy did not operate their helicopter in the same unsafe manner near HMS Queen Elizabeth and her escorts? Would the Iranians have approached the USS Essex in that unsafe manner if Donald Trump were President?

I'd like to hear the rest of the story. It could very easily have been take from a VERY small plastic drone, not something that would show up on radar, and NOT any substantial threat. As you know, a camera can be extremely tiny.
NEVER assume that the Iranians aren't lying.

OK, it wasn't a drone, it was reported by the USN to have been a helo.
Should have been shot down once it got closer than 1/2 mile.

At the same time, Iran's proxy /Houthis' have kidnapped and are holding hostage multiple US Embassy Employees, have taken over the USA Embassy in Yemen. Launched rockets at US forces in Syria/Libya, have exploded armed drones at US positions.
At the very least, "Warning brrrrrps"...with tracer rounds from the R2D2's/Chainguns should have stitched the air around it.
Make sure the next Iranians know to wear their Brown Trousers

Twenty five yards and they didn't splash the thing? Nothing about this is appropriate or safe, it was a cowardly response. I hate what our military has become. Outrageous as well as incredibly stupid.

Some things never change, such as the outcomes from appeasement. But, appeasement is, and remains, the policy of demorats. Either the ship's captain is a demorat stooge or he was given orders froma demorat stooge farther up the food chain to do nothing.
