DENVER — Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, a wealthy tech entrepreneur worth hundreds of millions of dollars, paid little or no federal income taxes in the nine years before the Democrat was elected governor, by taking advantage of loopholes that aren't available to most taxpayers, according to a ProPublica report published Thursday. Polis paid nothing in federal income taxes from 2013 to 2015 and paid an effective rate of 8.2% from 2010 to 2018, substantially lower than the 19% paid by a taxpayer who made $45,000 in 2018, the report found. The bombshell report is the latest revelation based on thousands of

No, loopholes are rules that a smart person will take advantage of when available.
If you use them they are not loopholes, if someone you want to criticize uses them they are loopholes.
Smart people pay smart accountants to find them and pay a lot for their advice.
Pro Publica, bah!

The "rich" are different. Most actually "own" very little, preferring corporations or trusts hold their assets. These entities pay taxes, and lots of them. Nobody issues "the rich" a W-2.

The problem is not that the rich do their best to pay as little tax as they are legally required to pay. No one should pay more in tax than she/he is legally required to pay.
The problem is that the so-called loopholes seem always to benefit the wealthy. The poor get all sorts of government subsidies. And we folks in the middle get squeezed.
If that weren't bad enough, the wealthy do-gooders want us normal folks to pay more in taxes and give more to poor folks -- as the elite define "poor folks." A lot of that money never really helps the poor. Rather, it props up a bureaucratic class.

Nothing will be done about this. I’m sure his tax returns are in order; he had the best accountants and attorneys he could hire. Besides, he’s not only a Democrat, he’s a homosexual, so he’s untouchable as far as the lamestream media goes. But his opponent next year ought to hammer him day and night about it. This idiot needs to go.

The only way no income is paid is to have no realized income. If he is worth millions, he probably has accumulated assets that have not been sold, and all those millions are on paper, not realized. Whenever he sells anything, he will get the cash, and will pay taxes. Entrepreneurship should not be compared to wage earners in testing the fairness of a tax system. Entrepreneurs have losses for years that can be carried forward and reduce future income, and their net worth can increase from value added that is not realized until the company is sold. BTW, if it is fairness that is wanted, the 50% of citizens that pay nothing in income taxes should be reviewed.

Gee, if his name was Trump, MSNBC would be 24/7 on this story.
Yeah, he's allowed to take advantage of loopholes and if you have the right tax professionals and money to hire them, you probably should take advantage of them. We aren't required to pay the most tax, but the least tax required.
But like the moral of the story of the bird who decided not to fly south in the winter, and ended up frozen with a pile of cow poop to warm him up and happily singing before the barn cat had him for lunch, if you're warm and happy, keep your mouth shut.
And don't go yapping to the rest of us that we aren't paying our "fair share." You may be right ... we're paying our fair share and a part of your share, too.

I congratulate anyone who can avoid paying taxes. Shut Off The Money is the only wat that Washington DC corruption will ever be controlled. The ultimate goal must be to end paycheck withholding & abolish the 16th Amendment.

That is correct, Poster 4, “folks in the middle get squeezed.”
Class warfare = war on the middle class. Leftists hate middle class money and power. And liberal elites lose sleep over the firearms owned by the middle class.

In the middle seventies my wife and I were hounded by the IRS, audited three years in a row, when our combined income was just 70K. I asked the IRS auditor why? I was told so that when we relate the nightmare to friends they would think twice about cheating on taxes. The whole issue started over a deduction for work clothes, my wife was an RN nurse. The IRS didn't trust our figure every year. Now old and broke I'm catching up on those years we gave in taxes. I don't like the word 'loophole' if it's there to use maybe that's what a person of wealth with tax lawyers can use to their advantage. I'm never jealous of any person's wealth if it was obtained honestly and wish to hold on to it. Let's go Brandon.

Since we know know that the communist democrats have controlled the IRS for years, how do we know if any of the top democrats have paid their taxes. Look at the Bidens, Stacey Abrams, Obama, AOC Pelosi, Schumer and even Al Sharpton and all the rest of the thieves. None of them pay their taxes. Yet these creep hypocrites go after Trump and his family. Why, to draw attention away from themselves. Got it..

OMG, the gov wanted to pay more, but he was a victim of an unfair tax system that made him pay less.

Everyone here is missing it: Polis is not far enough left and that is why he is being targeted. Make no mistake, he's quite liberal; but his stance on not implementing a statewide mask mandate, his stance on keeping current tax rates, and his stance on keeping TABOR (the Tax-payers Bill of Rights) does not endear him to the hard left that has a hold of the State Legislature.

Sorry, but 8.2% of millions is a lot more money than 19% of the taxable part of $45,000. They also fail to account for all of the other taxes paid by the companies and income taxes generated by the employees, vendors, and local economy. Would everyone rather have Jared Polis made no money or started any businesses in the name of "equity "?

Polis and his husband file joint tax returns. Most of that wealth isn't Polis's.
