The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office is searching to find out whether footage exists of the fatal shooting Thursday on the New Mexico set of the Alec Baldwin film Rust.
In an affidavit for a search warrant, Detective Joel Cano on Friday asked the state courts to allow him “to confirm if the incident that took place was or wasn’t recorded.”
The indoor rehearsal scene October 21 at the Bonanza Creek Ranch saw Baldwin handed a prop gun that “discharged” and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Director Joel Souza was also injured in the incident inside the “grey/brown” structure on the Ranch location, as the search warrant issued by
From the reports I have seen, it was filmed by the victim herself, who was running the camera that Baldwin fired the gun towards.

There is something strange here. Forget about how a real bullet got into the gun. How could he have killed the cinematographer? He would have to be aiming right at her. Why was he aiming at the cinematographer?

Glad to see Scottj back at the keyboard on L-dot. We might disagree on some topics, but we all can espouse our opinions.

Some movie shots are scripted to have the gun firing towards the camera.
The actors follow the script.
Thell Reed, the father of the very young female "gun wrangler" is probably pretty unhappy. He was one of the top few 'founding fathers' of the modern technique of the pistol, which traces it's roots back to the "Leatherslap" shooting events at Big Bear, California in the 1950s. Reed, Jeff Cooper, Ray Chapman, and Jack Weaver are some of the other early pioneers of this movement which resulted in numerous very important shooting techniques, then schools, the IPSC/USPSA internationa pistol competitions. Over time competition developed advanced techniques which were taught to the SEALs and other special ops teams starting in the 1980s. I trained at Chapman Academy in the early 80s, knew Ray fairly well from that time, and other matches that I competed in there, like Bianchi Cup. A friend was an instructor at Chapman....taught SEALs in the 80s when they really had a LOT to learn about gun handling, from civilian competitive shooters. SEALs today are extremely skilled at gun handling....but that wasn't true at all 40 years ago.
Thell Reed went off to Hollywierd and a trick shooting with a Western bent career, and taught actors to do the proper western gun handling, and was a gun wrangler on various movies. Looks like his daughter has pretty much blown up her career before it even got well started.

So Baldwin didn't shoot this poor woman, the gun "discharged", causing her death. I guess in anti 2nd amendment Baldwins eyes, it's the guns fault!

It is suspicious that the union thugs who had walked-off the set just a few hours earlier, [their organization] made an announcement that a single live round had been fired. They knew what happened before it had been announced by investigators. Maybe one of their disgruntled members put it there. There should never be live ammunition on a movie set.

No jail time for Baldwin, but lots of lawsuits from her family. He was the producer of the film... anything goes wrong, it's on him. Dead young woman, lots of years earning potential ahead of her, mother of young child, husband left alone, etc, etc. If he wasn't such a jerk, I might feel sorry for him.

I read that noted firearms expert alec baldwin is exec producer** of this el-cheapo shoot 'em up. If he ran that production half as good as he runs his mouth, that young mother would not have been killed. Just saying.
** also explains the rep this movie has as corner cutting and mean spirited. The road apple doesn't fall far from the horse's patoot.

It isn't clear - to me at least - why such a Warrant wasn't requested and used immediately on Thursday. I would not expect a "detailed" Affidavit requesting a Warrant would have been necessary.
And the legalese of making a Determination about whether a prop gun is a deadly weapon. I suppose that goes to intent. i.e. should Baldwin have considered it a deadly weapon.
It sounds as if the police are being very careful this time. And perhaps that is wise.

It's pretty much a given that Alec Baldwin won't face any charges.
What will happen is that he'll be sued and lose millions that way.
He will also find that no one will finance his movies. He will have a hard time finding acting rolls.
Karma is about to take him to the corner of Pay and Back.

Someone should tell whatever Sheriff's office has the search warrant, the film showing the shooting will never be found. It disappeared within seconds of the death of the cinematographer.

I would like to see the guns on the cart. Being set in the 1880s the handguns would have to be single action revolver style. Those firearms rifles included have on more step to activate them, cocking the hammer back to fire it. Unlike modern handguns and rifles today with safeties to turn off and on even a modern revolver will work just by pulling the trigger (DA) or manually cocking the hammer. In the case of the single action revolver you have to make a conscious effort to pull the hammer back to discharge it so if the handgun is what I think it is Baldwin would have had to make that step but why did he do it? He was told that it was a cold gun so did he just test it making the conscious movement to activate it to 'dry fire' dangerously pointing it a another person. I the obnoxious loud mouth had joined the NRA to learn some gun safety rules this might not have happened. Baldwin one called a staff member of the NRA of stacking bodies up as a murder now who is a murderer. This is interesting I would like to see what the set looked like.

They wouldn't necessarily have to be single-action although they probably were. I have an 1877 Colt Lightning and it's what they called a "self-cocker" in those days. Just pull the trigger and start firing. Doc Holliday carried one.
