Warring factions of the Democratic party are bracing themselves for a potentially bruising month of negotiations over the two massive economic and social packages that have reached an impasse in Congress threatening to derail Joe Biden’s first term in office. With Democratic leaders racing against a new 31 October deadline to pass the legislation, and with pressure building on the White House from both centrist and progressive wings of the party, the centerpiece of Biden’s agenda now hangs in the balance. Democratic prospects in next year’s midterm elections are also at stake. The outcome of the current party wrangling will

I’ve seen scores of articles that wrote off Biden’s agenda. Pure garbage. This monstrosity will pass, maybe in a slightly diluted form, but dems are going to slam this down the throats of American taxpayers. Manchin and Sinema are on board for $2 trillion, or so. Count on it.

A week ago, the Biden presidency was going to fail if Dems didn’t get their act together by close of business on 30 September. Now the deadline for derailment has been pushed back until 31 October. Were this a Republican presidency, there would be only failure in the eyes of the press. Biden gets do-overs all the time. His is the mulligan presidency.

Eventually, the Dems will realize that the clock is ticking down to the next election, where their clock will be cleaned. They will pass something, just a matter of time.

Brent crude, oil's international benchmark, jumped as much as 3% to $81.77 per barrel. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries as well as Russia and other non-member allies - also known as OPEC+ - ignored growing calls for opening the taps at a faster rate to bring down prices after oil rocketed to more

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — New Zealand's government acknowledged Monday what most other countries did long ago: It can no longer completely get rid of the coronavirus. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a cautious plan to ease lockdown restrictions in Auckland, despite an outbreak there that continues to simmer. Since early in the pandemic, New Zealand had pursued an unusual zero-tolerance approach to the virus through strict lockdowns and aggressive contact tracing. Until recently, that elimination strategy had worked remarkably well for the country of 5 million, which has reported just 27 virus deaths. While other nations faced rising death tolls and

An upstate New York county is being forced to send human bodies to a hospital 50 miles away for autopsies because its prominent medical examiner has not been vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to county officials. Rensselaer County moved autopsies on Friday to Glens Falls Hospital from Albany Medical Center Hospital, which requires everyone who works there to be vaccinated, Richard Crist, the county's director of operations, told the Times Union. The county's medical examiner, Dr. Michael Sikirica, had been performing the county's autopsies at the Albany hospital. Although Sikirica does not work at that hospital, all doctors who provide

It's too soon to say whether the pandemic has eased enough for families to gather for Christmas this year, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday. Fauci, making the Sunday talk show rounds, said on CBS News' "Face the Nation" that Americans first need to focus on lowering the number of new infections and hospitalizations. The best way to do that: Vaccination and booster shots, he said. "We've just got to concentrate on continuing to get those numbers down and not try to jump ahead by weeks or months and say what we're going to do at a particular time," Fauci said.

Despite having the highest vaccination rates in the country, there are constant reminders for most New England states of just how vicious the delta variant of COVID-19 is. Hospitals across the region are seeing full intensive care units and staff shortages are starting to affect care. Public officials are pleading with the unvaccinated to get the shots. Homeowners who refuse to take part in a hydrogen energy trial will be forcibly cut off by gas network operators, under Government plans to test green heating alternatives. Residents in one village will begin the pilot scheme by 2025 to help the Government assess whether hydrogen gas can be used as a low-carbon alternative for heating homes across the country. Ministers insisted the powers to enter people's homes and switch off their gas would only be used as a "last resort" if the homeowners had refused to engage with any other options. Sen. The centrist Sinema is not a fan of tying the two pieces of legislation together, however, as she reveleaded in Saturday's statement. She called the dual-track approach "an ineffective stunt" and said she has "never, and would never, agree to any bargain that would hold one piece of legislation hostage to another." While she didn't mention them by name, Sinema also

Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh reportedly tested positive for COVID, raising the very important question: WHO CARES?! It apparently has to be said that testing positive for COVID is not in itself newsworthy. In particular if the person has received a vaccine, which Kavanaugh purportedly has. As of Friday, he hasn’t been hospitalized. He’s not even showing any symptoms, according to a spokeswoman for the court. So, again, who cares? Wishing him the best, but positive cases shouldn’t be of any particular interest to anyone. Honestly, unless Dr. Fauci dies of COVID, the entire pandemic is no longer a story.

On Saturday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Yasmin Vossoughian Reports,” Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) argued that the $3.5 trillion price tag for the Build Back Better Act reconciliation package “is a modest investment” for an economy the size of America’s. Torres said, “[T]here’s misconception about the price tag of the Build Back Better Act. The Build Back Better Act, the original draft, it is not 3.5 trillion over the course of a year. It’s over the course of ten years. So, it’s $350 billion. Which, for a $20 trillion economy like ours, is a modest investment. So, I think it’s shortsighted to focus on the price tag.”

Benedict Cumberbatch is reflecting on playing a closeted cattle rancher who falls in love with a young man in 1920s Montana in his new movie “The Power of the Dog.” The Oscar-nominated actor plays Phil Burbank, a hypermasculine rancher who inspires fear in awe in those around him—a reign of terror that comes from a deeply closeted sexuality. His made-up persona runs into some trouble after his brother (Jesse Plemons) brings home a new wife (Kirsten Dunst) and her queer son (Kodi Smit-McPhee). His inaugural address was all about these themes. America needs some level of national healing more than anything else. Americans can’t go on at each other’s throats. The country is falling apart.
