Bug experts are getting rid of the name 'gypsy moth' because some Roma people consider it to be an ethnic slur. The Entomological Society of America, which oversees the common names of bugs, is getting rid of the common name of that critter and the lesser-known gypsy ant. The group this week announced that for the first time it changed a common name of an insect because it was offensive. In the past they've only reassigned names that weren't scientifically accurate. 'It's an ethnic slur to begin with that's been rejected by the Romani people a long time ago,' said society president Michelle S. Smith.

Well, how about changing German Shepherd, Irish Wolfhound, Mexican Chihuahua, German roaches, etc. This renaming could be a slippery slope.

Maybe if gypsies weren't such criminals the name wouldn't have such a negative connotation.

If nobody told them that needed to be offended, they would have never known that they needed to be offended. After years and years it is suddenly a problem. Even bug names are now politicized.

They need to change the name of cows hogs and pigs because it could be a slur on fat women.

I guess "Homeless Moths" would also be offensive now that they are another protected group. Watch out, Blacksnakes, you are on the short list.

If they no longer use the word gypsy to describe themselves then how can it be a slur? Has everyone lost their minds? Nevermind....

Gypsy is merely the westernized name for grifters and cheats that flooded through Europe from Egypt from the 1600s onward.
These Roma snowflakes need to smarten up.

FTA:The Entomological Society of America is now scrutinizing some of the more than 2,000 common insect names to remove ones that are perceived to be derogatory or geographically inaccurate.
So they are just getting started. Facebook and Twitter will be quite busy locking down accounts that use the wrong name for a bug.

I'm fine with renaming it the Marxist Moth given that it spread destruction everywhere. They can rename it that.

Some years ago we were in Ennis, Ireland when we learned that a big Gypsy wedding was planned for that day. We looked around and every shop and pub in town was closing for the day and locking up tight. One of the shopkeepers told that me that if they didn’t close they would get robbed blind. Maybe if the Gypsies didn’t want to be considered thieves then maybe they shouldn’t have turned to a life of thieving.

Carpenters everywhere are upset that they are associated with "carpenter" ants. Same issue for vampires and "vampire" bats. We need to find new and less demeaning names for those species.
