Comedy Is a Dictatorship's First Victim

Original Article

Humor has always been one of the first targets of a dictatorship. It is no surprise that in America, comedians can no longer function because of rampant political correctness. Thus, according to Mel Brooks, "we have become stupidly politically correct, which is the death of comedy. Comedy has to walk a thin line, take risks." Comedian Gilbert Gottfried says: Imagine if the most brilliant comedians in history were working today. They'd never stop apologizing. Charlie Chaplin would have to apologize to all the homeless people he belittled with his Little Tramp character.

Comments:

Sufficient to say that if this current maladministration were republican, comedians would be having a field day mining this gold mine.

Richard Pryor was one of the highest paid comedians of the 70s and 80s. The movies he made, everyone watched. The crowds he drew were blockbuster. Mel Brooks made us all laugh our butts off with his movies that made a fortune. Both were as ireverant and unapologetic as hell and that was great!! The top TV sitcoms of the 70s and 80s featured racially mixed casts and many were based on black families. And everyone and I mean everyone watched them on primetime. They weren't religated to BET or special times on cable. This nation had MOVED ON. And then came Obama. 'Nuf said.

what comedy??? we haven't had comedy since the days of Abbott and Costello or maybe Milton Berle or Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca or Jackie Gleason and Art Carney and the list goes on to include the early days of Bill Cosby. revisionist history is a dangerous thing and shouldn't be toyed with. we don't have "comics" today in the public square, they are foul mouthed annihilators of the society and add nothing to the values by eliciting laughs from people who have no idea of the real content of the "comedians" act. the same goes for female comediennes a la Kathy Griffin, don't know where she gets off calling herself a "comedienne". she is not.

We are blessed every day that the Lord has allowed us to keep Mel Brooks in out midst. Some of the old Friars roasts and the Dean Martin roasrs are among the funniest bits of comedy. Yeah, they could be a lttle out of line, but they didn't need an f-word, n-word, s-word, c-word, b-word, etc. to do the deed (unlike a recent Comedy Central roast I saw that was unwatchable and just a contest of who could say the most profanity in three minutes). I heard Groucho Marx roast Johnny Carson on a Sirus XM program the other day. As the MC, Alan King (a comedy icon in his own right) say, the two funniest words in the english language are "Groucho Marx."

They pretty much killed comedy about 15-20 years ago. Nothing at all funny about the current "comedy" folks, in most cases. Red Skelton, Jack Benny, and all the team at the Carol Burnett Show were really funny. And no hate needed, or wanted.

Consider two contrasting quotes on how reason and passion relate to truth in a society. The first is (or once was, anyway) quite famous amongst Americans, spoken by Founder John Adams during his defense of the British soldiers accused of murder in the Boston Massacre of 1770: Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence. The second is from a figure of whom few alive could claim ignorance. As Jonah Goldberg relates in his book, Liberal Fascism:
Americans Exiled within America 1 reply

"Exile" conjures images of banished figures like Napoleon, who languished on the island of Elba, rendered powerless by isolation. Groups of people considered troublemakers also have been exiled from their lands. Diasporas of "undesirables" like the Jews have been a constant in the history of nations whose rulers wanted to be rid of what they considered indigestible elements. Exile within one's own country by a totalitarian regime has been less noted. For such an enterprise, we may look at Vichy France, which was under the thrall and control of a fascist political system imported by Germany but facilitated by French citizens.

The National Guard was deployed in Minneapolis as hundreds of people looted and rioted into the early hours Monday after a black man was shot dead by police just 10 miles from where George Floyd died. The fatal shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center came as the Twin Cities was already in a state of high alert over the trial of ex-cop Derek Chauvin charged with Floyd’s murder last May. Within hours of Wright’s 2 p.m. fatal shooting, at least 500 protesters had taken to the streets, according to the Star Tribune — many looting and trashing up to at least 20 stores, officials later revealed.

If George Washington is the Father of our country, then Ted Kennedy is the father of anti-America. What is anti-America? It is a deep-seated disdain for the America most of us love. Anti-America hates our history, our culture, and our success. Hatred, victimhood, and bitterness are the elements binding anti-America together. America twice afforded Ted Kennedy the opportunity to become President. His family was to American politics what the Tudors were to England. Ted was reported to be an excellent football player at Harvard.

Any criticism of my friend's lack of confidence in any qualified aviatrix is answered along these lines: "She can't drive a stick shift. I should trust her with a Jumbo Jet?" n the debate over whether one should or should not get the COVID vaccination, much has been said about the “science.” However, I’m not sure any encyclopedic knowledge of “science” is required to make this health decision. Simple statistical analysis should suffice to inform one’s ultimate decision. Statistics is primarily a study of probabilities. Fortunately, as regards COVID mortality rates, these probabilities are now known. That is, COVID mortality statistics broken down by age cohorts are now “known knowables.” For example, through statistics as of April 7, the odds an American under the age of 25 would die from COVID were 1-in-106,217.
