Chicago - The price of lumber in America has more than doubled over the last year and continues to spike, somewhat erratically, industry insiders say. It's causing many Americans to be priced out of buying new homes, and causing builders to cancel existing contracts. "A year ago, the same thing you're standing on was $14 a sheet," said Patrick Franz, owner of Clairmont LTD in the Chicago suburbs, pointing to a sheet of plywood he says would now cost him $55 or $65 at the lumber yard. (Snip) Senator Duckworth said. "The COVID-19 pandemic, global warming and Donald Trump’s misdirected trade wars all contributed to a shortage

Comments:

Of course, democrat response to the issue: Trump and global warming.

One of my relatives works for a company that builds fences. He said the increase in the price of lumber is staggering. Just recently, a business here in town got robbed. They didn't take cash, they took plywood.

The greenies and tree huggers shut down many lumber mills are directly responsible for the price of timber. Now that trees are racist ? Build your house out of mud and quit whining.

Last summer our new neighbors asked if we wanted to go halves on a new fence between our backyards (apprx 150ft). I said sure and asked what our share would be. $3000. I was floored and called our son who has had his own one man construction company for years and asked him if that was a bit much. He said no, that the price of lumber has soared. We did keep the old fencing and a bit of new lumber that wasn't used, so we have quite a bit of lumber. I should put it up for sale for a couple of thousand. It really is still in good condition, just needs a foot or so taken from the bottom.

Shut down the lumber industry for a year. Pay their workers to stay home. Then, you end up with no lumber, and the inventory you have will be priced through the roof. It is amazing that the left don't get that you economic prosperity comes from production of goods and services, not from production of paper money.

There are lots of reasons for a spike in lumber prices. #1: political interference. #2: fuel cost. #3: inflation. #4: demand. President Trump and global warming are not even on the list. The source for this list is me, a retired builder with 50 years experience. When democraps get in power this happens. Think Jimmy Carter (18% interest), Clinton ($4+ gas prices) and Obama (building crash of 2008).

Its not just lumber. Price per square foot for a steel building package a year ago $6.00. Price per square foot as quoted yesterday $18.00. All building materials are going through the roof. Trust me I'm getting price increase emails daily. Prefinished steel up 35% in one jump, prior to that a 2% increase was considered big. Polyiso insulation and single ply roofing material up 5% this week. Its getting very scary to bid a construction project!

Observations from a small town in Mendocino County. We have one of the last two remaining sawmills in the county. There used to be 28 before the Greenie War on Timber. In the Obama years the log yards were practically empty and the finished lumber yards were paltry. During the Trump administration was the first time in 20 years I saw the yards full to the brim. Now the yards are half empty. They are cutting timber, I see the logging trucks moving on the highway but not at the volume of pre-covid.

And ammo is a dollar to a dollar-fifty a shot. Lots of wild shortages and crazy prices. A friend has a small business and one of his largest customers is a huge national jewelry chain. They recently shut down about 25% of their stores, which is cutting a big chunk out of his income, too. Dr. Fraud needs to be hung for what he did to this country.
