Untangling the suspect’s motive isn’t easy when race and sex are competing to dominate the narrative. Six of the dead are women of Asian descent, yet the shooter told police he wasn’t motivated by racial bigotry.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --- Gov. Ron DeSantis has emphatically resisted placing restrictions on businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
But DeSantis this week suggested he may go after companies if they require customers to show proof that they are vaccinated, saying “it’s more than just a private decision.”
The governor was referring to what have been called COVID-19 passports, a phenomenon gathering momentum abroad.
“It’s a very, very bad idea,” DeSantis said of requiring COVID-19 passports. “Look, if you want to go to a movie theater or a concert or all this stuff, go. If you don’t, don’t. But, to require someone to show some type of proof of vaccination is completely unacceptable

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is trying to find out if New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his advisors provided false numbers on the state's nursing home deaths during the coronavirus pandemic to the Department of Justice last summer, according to a New York Times report on Friday.
Four people with knowledge of the probe told The Times that federal investigators have subpoenaed Cuomo's office for documents regarding the data, reached out to lawyers for Cuomo's aides, and spoken to officials from the state's Health Department on the matter.
The investigation is part of the FBI's broader examination of Cuomo's handling of nursing homes
The D.C. superior court granted National Review’s motion to dismiss climate scientist Michael Mann’s long-running defamation suit.
More than eight years ago, Mann launched the suit against NR, writing privately that he saw it as an opportunity to “ruin” this “filthy organization.”
The lawsuit stemmed from a blog post on The Corner by Mark Steyn back in 2012 criticizing Mann’s work. The climate scientist threatened a lawsuit unless NR removed the offending post and apologized, which it refused to do. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday announced new guidance for physical-distancing requirements between children in schools, allowing for just three feet of space between students instead of the six feet it had previously recommended.
The new guidance, which will allow more students to be inside classrooms, does not apply to teachers and other adult school staff who still must remain six feet apart. Masks should remain mandatory as well, according to the CDC.
Students also must continue to maintain six feet of distance in common areas, such as auditoriums, and when masks are off, the guidance says.
To the surprise of no one, New York Times and reporter Sheryl Gay Stolberg was disingenuous in a Thursday story accusing culture-war obsessed Republicans of endangering America’s health during the pandemic: “Biden’s Top Health Posts Remain Empty as G.O.P. Focuses on Culture Wars,”
It’s clear The Times considers free expression, abortion, and women’s right to spaces of their own are time-wasting clickbait -- though with the issues of Dr. Seuss, abortion, and transgender activism, it’s invariably Republicans reacting to leftist overreach.

While being scorched in the media and even challenged in the courts by teachers’ unions, the plan installed by Governor Ron DeSantis for reopening the schools across the state of Florida has been a success. Parents who wanted children back in social settings and students in the most need of personal guidance have been given the chances they asked for, and the results have been only positive across the board. Now, data is supporting this decision as well.
During the pandemic, the media have been operating in a paradox.
We now have several COVID vaccines. All work, all have passed safety testing, and all are in wide distribution.
This is a huge accomplishment, but there’s one problem: A lot of people aren’t taking the shot.
Are they just ignorant anti-vaxxers?
No. As a recent focus group by Frank Luntz, reported in The Washington Post, demonstrates, a lot of people who won’t take the vaccine aren’t skeptical about vaccines in general. Just about this batch.
So maybe they’re just Red State Luddites?
No. In fact, it’s a worldwide phenomenon.
