Erika Rose was shocked this month when she sat down to do her taxes and realized she owed $600 to the federal government. She’s been on unemployment since April and has spent much of the winter stretching every penny to pay rent and to keep the lights on. On a recent trip to the grocery store, she only had $20 in her bank account. (Snip) Rose is among millions of unemployed workers facing surprise tax bills, ranging from several hundred to several thousand dollars, and many say they just can’t pay. For tax purposes, weekly unemployment payments count as income

All the "stimulus" efforts have been a last, futile attempt to keep the country's financial house of cards from collapsing. It won't stay up much longer. Better that it collapses under the JoHo Administration than under Trump. Because the blowback is going to be unlike anything we've ever experienced. It was going down either way, though few people want to admit it.

Being dependent upon the government for anything sucks. There were almost as many Help Wanted signs out there during the past year than Trump/Pence signs. You should applied for a job, sweetheart.

Given that more and more of our hard earned money is wasted, stolen, siphoned off through graft, corruption, wealth distribution, with vast sums given to illegal aliens who are not citizens and do not belong here, with public monies funneled to all the communist death democrats front groups who are dedicated to the destruction of our country, and to crazy PC organizations, at what point to the vast majority of Americans simply stand up and refuse to pay taxes?
Taxing unemployment payments are double taxation and kicking people in the teeth while they are struggling. The communist death democrats love it!

I understand Ca. sent 30M of fraudulent unemployment benefits to prisoners, and Washington sent about the same to African fraudsters. Texas chipped in by sending a boatload, also to fraudsters. As for this person, Erika has been not working for quite a long time. I almost think she is not seeking a job. If she has not found one after a few months, then she needs to move somewhere where she can find a job, and move on with her life.

These sob stories are a load of crap. If these people were collecting unemployment for a year and owe $1,500 in taxes on it, they were making a lot of money for doing nothing. the Federal Government paid $600 and in some states like NY, they got another $500 per week if they made a modest $58,000 the year before.
that is $52,800 in unemployment pay. They did not have to pay for transportation, clothing, meals out etc while they were at home not working. This is another play on the part if the leftist Washington Post to get the government to give more money away to be put on the backs of future generations.

A real stimulus would suspend federal income taxes for employers and employees. That would include FICA and SS taxes. Along with that, eliminate minimum wage and allow employers to pay employees in cash with no reporting to the feds. Kind of like the unfair advantage illegal aliens have over American employees (with all the paperwork involved).

My husband was on unemployment for seven weeks when all this covid crap hit the fan. When he filed they automatically held out fed and state taxes. I can't believe Indiana was the only state doing that.

Cry me a river! My employees actually worked all year, probably made less than most of the people on unemployment (Max State benefit + $600 Fed benefit annualized) and had to pay to drive to work, and all other going to work related expenses. They didn't get to stay home and watch TV, enjoy the beach all summer, and have a 9 month vacation on the governments dime. They worked and also paid all of their taxes and many still owe more money to the IRS because they had to work overtime because so many people did not want to work because of the money they got from unemployment!

Those who could not manage money before the pandemic cannot manage money a year later.
it is difficult to get control of your money but it can be done.

There is no free lunch or paycheck. These are grown people not exactly in minimum wage jobs.
What happened to last year's tax refund ? The stimulus checks ? Excess unemployment payments ?

No worries, the next stimulus bill will have tax forgiveness funding, which will be taxable.

It's no secret that unemployment can be taxable. Miss Erika even admits she 'checked the boxes' for withholding, so her income must have been quite good all year to owe even more tax.
