The hundreds of far-left and anarchist demonstrators who gathered in protest mere hours after President Biden swore the oath of office Wednesday signal a fracturing on the left that could become a scourge for the new administration, experts say, with some activists continuing to use destructive measures to voice rejection of centrist ideologies they believe will do little to address existential worries over climate change, economic inequality, foreign wars and racism. Destruction of the Oregon Democratic Party headquarters by extreme-left demonstrators on Inauguration Day has split Portland liberals, and federal agents’ launching of tear gas at crowds that descended on

Officials across Southern California are opening more sites to administer coronavirus vaccine. But there are concerns that the shortage in vaccine doses could worsen before it gets better. Authorities have said the biggest problem right now is getting enough vaccine to meet demand. At current rates, it could be June before Californians 65 and over are fully vaccinated. And full vaccination in places like L.A. County might not be possible until 2022. Dr. Paul Simon, chief science officer for the county Department of Public Health, said Friday that if weekly vaccine shipments were to increase to 500,000 doses, the county

A group of three dozen House Democrats signed a letter Friday asking President Joe Biden to commute the death sentences of all federal death row inmates and work to dismantle the form of punishment at the federal level. The plea comes on the heels of 13 executions carried out by the Trump administration since July, a legacy the Democrats described as "one of carnage and unrestrained violence." They called on Biden, who has voiced his opposition to the death penalty, to emphasize rehabilitation for offenders in his Justice Department, not execution. "The fact of the matter is that these death

President Joe Biden has put his team to work reviewing dozens of actions taken by former President Donald Trump, aiming to reverse orders that he says harm the environment or endanger public health. For the energy sector and Louisiana jobs, the impact could be far-reaching. Oil and gas operations are being scrutinized — from how companies extract resources from the ground to the safety of pipelines that distribute the fuels. The new president aims to transition the country to 100% renewable energy for electricity generation by 2035 and net-zero emissions in the overall economy by 2050. Many experts agree that

Continuing a flurry of executive action, President Biden signed an order Friday calling on the Labor Department to allow workers to collect unemployment benefits if they quit jobs they fear put them at risk for COVID-19. Pointing to a Gallup Poll finding that found 43% of Americans live in a household where at least one member has a preexisting condition, the White House wrote in a release: “The President is asking the Department of Labor to consider clarifying that workers have a federally guaranteed right to refuse employment that will jeopardize their health and if they do so, they will

The National Guard is planning to ask up to 7,000 troops deployed to Capitol Hill to volunteer to stay until March 12, according to Military.com. An official reportedly said the plan was still being finalized, and that Guardsmembers would not be required to remain deployed over its 31-day activation. "We are not going to make anybody stay," spokesperson Nahaku McFadden told Military.com.
Of the roughly 25,000 troops initially deployed to the Capitol for security on Inauguration Day, 15,000 of them are expected to return to their respective states this week. Guardsmembers from all of the US states and territories like

The Biden administration is trying to figure out exactly what’s holding up the national Covid-19 vaccine rollout, searching for any hiccups in the manufacturing process, suppliers and distribution networks, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Thursday. President Joe Biden has vowed to have 100 million shots of vaccine administered in his first 100 days in office, a task that would require the U.S. to modestly accelerate the current rate of vaccination. Some large states, though, are telling the federal government they have capacity to vaccinate even more people but aren’t getting

WILMINGTON, Del. – While Joe Biden gave his inauguration speech on Wednesday afternoon, a lone person in a blue uniform kneeled at the grave of Biden’s son Beau at St. Joseph on the Brandywine church in Greenville, Delaware. The person kept their head bowed before and after the speech and clasped their hands. The person said nothing. No one else was in the cemetery on the cold, windy afternoon except for a few workers doing outside maintenance. The identity of the person was not known. A News Journal reporter did not approach out of respect. The person remained at the

WASHINGTON—President Biden signed 10 executive orders on his first full day in office to combat the coronavirus, seeking Thursday to jump-start the U.S. response to the pandemic while warning it will take “many months to get where we need to be.” The new strategy is focused partly on ramping up vaccinations and curbing the spread of the virus through mask wearing, testing data and treatments, and includes the executive orders and directives signed Thursday. One order directs agencies to use their authority, including the Defense Production Act, to meet shortfalls in supplies such as masks, while another establishes a pandemic

LONDON — When reporters toured the recently redecorated Oval Office on Wednesday at the White House, they took note of the symbolic changes in scenery that have come to stand in for an incoming U.S. president’s view of the nation. President Biden’s choices included a portrait of wartime President Franklin D. Roosevelt and a bust of civil rights hero Rosa Parks. But as Biden began his first full day in office the next morning, many British outlets pounced on a notable absence: a bust of Winston Churchill, FDR’s World War II counterpart, on loan from the British government. CALGARY, Alberta - U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday formally revoked the permit needed to build the Keystone XL oil pipeline (KXL), dashing Ottawa’s hopes of salvaging the $8 billion project that the struggling Canadian crude sector has long supported. The move represents another set-back for the beleaguered Canadian oil industry, in particular its energy heartland Alberta, kills thousands of jobs, and marks an early bump in Biden’s relationship with Canada, a key trading partner. Keystone XL, owned by TC Energy Corp, is already under construction in Canada, and would carry 830,000 barrels per day of Alberta oil sands crude

Golf star Justin Thomas said Wednesday he will enter a training program amid the fallout from muttering a homophobic slur during a tournament earlier this month. Thomas, who lost Ralph Lauren as a sponsor, said he hoped to "become a better person." "It’s not a word I use," Thomas insisted. "And like I said, it’s going to be part of this process and training program, whatever I need to do, not only to prove to myself but to prove to my sponsors and prove to the people who don’t know who I am that that is indeed not the person
