One of the nation's largest teachers unions is authorizing its members to strike if their schools plan to reopen without proper safety measures in the middle of the global pandemic. The American Federation of Teachers, which represents 1.7 million school employees, issued a resolution on Tuesday saying it will support any local chapter that decides to strike over reopening plans. In providing its blessing, the union is also offering local chapters access to its financial and legal resources as they navigate a return to the classroom. Union officials said they will provide legal support, communications support and staffing to local

Let the unions pay them, and not the taxpayers that are always getting stiffed by these public unions. They've been sitting on their keesters for over a half a year, getting paid. If the children have to wear masks all day and the masks are as 'safe' as we're constantly being told they are, with the teachers in masks, there should be nor danger. President Trump is right, if the parents have to form home schooling alternatives, then the per student cash that the schools get for each student, should go to the parents to help defray the cost of that home schooling, or private and/or parochial schools if they are open and available.

What school is going to open without going completely anal with cleaning, and just what does this union consider to be, "PROPER SAFETY MEASURES"? While I'm sure there are some teachers, (younger teachers seem especially hell bent on staying out) most teachers my wife talk to can't wait to get back in school. However, those that want to get back, are resigned that their opinions mean nothing to the school district and teacher's union, and are making plans to teach online to start the school year.

So it's a threat to do nothing while doing nothing. Just wanted to clear that up.

This will not end well for the teachers’ unions. Home schooling and school choice support will skyrocket.

Sorry to double post but many children will be sent to daycares. To be in groups, supervised by vulnerable adults. So who is being protected here?

Privatize all public schools and get rid of the "Red for Ed!" unions.

If we double your salary, would you be willing ? Same as prostitutes. They recognize an opportunity.
I know. Maybe we could import some teachers from another country.

Reagan fired the air controllers. It's time for Trump to do away with the EO allowing teachers to have unions.

I will remind the Unions, their position is tenuous at best.
President Reagan wiped out the Air Traffic Controllers Union in one signed EO, Trump can do the same thing and it will be BEAUTIFUL! Refusing to work was the reason...HELLO UNIONS????

Here's a plan:
Call off the school year until September 2021. Shutter the schools and send the entire staff of the school systems nationwide home, without pay. Laid off like others have experienced. Kids are all advanced a year on return, unless parents decide to hold them back.
Done. Kids are safe. Teachers are safe. Administration is safe. It's all for the children, you know.

#10, this is not within the authority o0f any president. States pass laws providing for teacher collective bargainjing along with state and local employees.
The air traffic controllers were federal employees, and Taft Hartley Act forbids strikes by federal employees. In addition, their collective bargaining agreement, PATCO and the Federal Government, had a no strike clause.
President Reagan had no choice but to fire the striking workers.
As for the American Federation of Teachers, I don't know if their permission is needed for a local chapter to go on strike.
