WASHINGTON — Against the backdrop of protests across the country over police shootings of unarmed Black people and racial disparities, some mayors and local officials are proposing ways to examine the impact of slavery and help atone for it, including reparations. From Providence to Asheville, N.C., local officials have proposed measures to begin to address years of what they call injustices in their communities. The measures range from resolutions to support studying reparations to proposals funneling more funds into programs for Black communities. “It’s always the right time to do the right thing,” said Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, noting the

A terrible idea - no matter how much is paid it will not be enough - and something else will immediately be demanded.

Let them pay for it themselves, perhaps through voluntary property tax contributions. See how many loudmouths pony up.

Here's an idea for you crazy mayors and local officials: Put this garbage on the ballot in your cities or towns and let's see what the actual TAXPAYERS have to say about it! (Hope your feeeelings don't get hurt.)

No. The statuatory time for reparations passed 150 years ago. The moral call for non slave holders to make reparatiins to bon slaves does not exist.

Glad I live in a place where if a politician were to propose reparations he/she would be shot dead. And I am not in the Deep South, either.

The U.S. taxpayer has been paying reparations for decades in the form of welfare, food stamps, free housing, free medical care, free education, preferential treatment in education, preferential treatment in hiring, etc. We have even allowed and encouraged a moral, generous and law-abiding society to be dragged down to a much lower level where welfare is preferred over an honest job, drugs are foisted on our children, education is devalued and lowered to accommodate the least capable students and the rule of law is disregarded, especially for certain groups of people. Our reward is war-torn, drug-ravaged neighborhoods even entire cities; open rioting, murder, rape and property destruction where no one is held responsible and a corrupt, crumbling government at all levels that seems incapable of doing its job. And now the final insult is to spend our taxes on reparations.

A bribe by any other name [reparations] is still a bribe.

When do they propose to start the bLACKS payments to the families of White soldiers that died setting slaves free? I'd like to know where and when to apply. Of course, my grandparents didn't get here until 1905, but if all bLACKS are descendants of slaves, then all Whites must be descendants of civil war soldiers.

Lies and more lies. They cite the usual list of imagined racial injustices and mention the two cities in the entire country that have fallen for the BLM ruse. The next big battle will be over cash payments to individual blacks because slavery practiced before 1865 somehow harmed them personally versus huge sums of money being allocated to black programs that would subsequently disappear down the rathole. It's a real shame about Asheville because it used to be a nice vacation spot, now it will turn into one big wefare dump.

Stick your reparations where the sun don't shine....we, the taxpaying public, are getting sick and tired of this pandering to extremists...no one alive was a slave, no one alive owned slaves, so we don't owe you crappe...get a job, get a life, get some morality, be productive instead of a liberal lemming following your leaders over the cliff...

Let the descendants of slave owners, both black, yes thousands of black families owned slaves, and white, pick up the tab for this.

Let's just nationalize or localize everybody's paychecks. Let bureaucrats decide what "causes" they want us to donate to. Heck, that's basically what they do with our taxes now. This will do wonders for businesses thinking of moving to cities that do this.

If those local communities elect politicians to office who want to pay out reparations it’s the people who elected them should pay into a reparations fund in each of those communities.
Politicians whose ancestors or themselves came into the USA after the Civil War, or the descendants of Black slaves, should not be telling the descendants of Union Army veterans that they should now pay for reparations to the decedents of slaves that the Union Army fought to free from slavery.
