Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has repeatedly promised to fix New York’s archaic unemployment-insurance system, which has been overwhelmed by an unprecedented wave of claims. The state has partnered with Google to overhaul the online application, staffed call centers with thousands of additional workers and expanded their call-volume capacity, and vowed to address outstanding unemployment claims within 72 hours. Carly Keohane has yet to benefit from any of those improvements. Ms. Keohane, who lost her waitressing job in Rochester, N.Y., has been waiting a month to receive $2,124 in unemployment payments as a direct deposit into her bank account. But the

Not Don Cuomos New York?. How will he blame this on President Trump, during his next 'Pat myself on the back' daily cringeworthy presser?

Don’t construe this as defending Cuomo..
Most large states were ill prepared for a pandemic and large influx of unemployment..
So, now, governors of all stripes know what to do or not do next time we have a crisis.. we’ll, ok , the good will use the moment for learn and grow.. positively, others will figure how to scam the system.

It will be good for the US when all nyt reporters and editors and management file for unemployment.

Could it be that Lord Cuomo auctioned off the computer servers along with the ventilators? Lord Cuomo is hoping for a cash bailout from the Feds so he can fix NY. But he can afford nipple rings. Enough said.

This is why financial advisers/planners advise people to have at least three months' expenses (six if you're over 50) stashed in a savings account. You can't count on unemployment kicking in immediately. Somewhere along the line, we quit teaching people to prepare to take care of themselves. I once had a planner tell me, "I've got clients who make over $200,000 a year and don't have a penny saved. When I ask them to put aside money every week for a rainy day fund, they scream and cry that they can't afford it."

When are we going to recognize that almost all the preparedness and reaction to most emergencies and pandemics is done at the state and local level.
The federal government can bring in funds, usually AFTER the fact and supplies, within limits, but CANNOT and was never meant to be able to supply and carry out disaster relief for the whole Country.
If things are not working, the first line of accountability is the state and local governments, in this case Cuomo, the same person responsible for not having adequate numbers of PPE and ventilators.
On top of that, unemployment does NOT start immediately after you lose your job.

I feel bad for the residents of NY who live outside of the rot of NYC. I can empathize with some of their plight when it comes to voting, I truly can.

Another failure by the Governor Andrew Cuomo run State Government in New York. Remember Cuomo has been the Democrat Governor of New York since 2011, the State that appears to have been most not ready for, and vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus. Keeping in mind that the arrival of the virus in New York is solely the secretive Government of Communist China’s fault and not Cuomo’s or any other US politician. So President Trump was right again in admonishing Cuomo, that he should knock off the politics, stop talking, and start getting his State level Government’s incompetence under control.

This is why the President did not want to work through the states, but directly.
Most state unemployment agencies move at the speed of a snail, or slower.

#7 is correct. I have my stash in a CD and a savings account. FDIC insured and not subject to the whims of the market (my IRA has taken a hit tho). The CD and savings aren't paying doodly-squat now but I am trading that for safety.

#7, absolutely. I started with 3 months of expenses as my goal right out of college. After about 6 years, that was increased to a flat $10,000 in 'rainy day' savings account. Now, retired, most money invested in many mutual funds, bond funds and annuities, we have a pretty large credit union cash account. Too,
for that 'rainy day'.
Last week, I pulled out what was, a few years back, a year's gross pay for me , and gave it to my financial advisors. One third has been invested in stocks, which are so far up 7% in about a week. There will be two more 1/3 chunks of that money as 'buy-ins' into stocks in the next few weeks. I am betting that I will make a 20 to 30 percent return on that money in one year, could be 50% gain.

Not “they”. One waitress. They sent her a state sponsored debit card. She hasn’t gotten it. It will be very hard for her to work this one out. How does she prove she didn’t get it? If someone pinched it, they could use it...

You know, if Nancy hadn't given $25 million to the Kennedy Center it would have gone a long ways. Someone said yesterday ValJar is on their board. Funny how that worked.
