Ordinary people have been doing extraordinary things these days, but the federal government keeps underperforming. The government's failure to make COVID-19 tests widely available is a prime example. Despite broad consensus on the need for COVID-19 testing, the number of those tested is far behind where it should be.
It’s time for something bold. President Trump needs to invoke the Defense Production Act to get large, capable companies to develop, manufacture, and widely distribute COVID-19 tests. Home tests, produced with consistent high quality, can augment existing testing approaches, enabling people to test without leaving home.
Or Americans can stop acting like cowards and demand to see the mortality rates of other diseases... Cancer, heart attacks, murder... The mortality rate of murder compared to this "Bad cold".

I think that widespread testing for covid antibodies will be the big gamechanger.

There would already be such testing if the FDA had not squashed it a couple of weeks ago. There were at least two companies which were ramping up offering home testing based on a ruling the FDA made when the FDA "clarified" that ruling to state that such tests were illegal.

#3 is right. I was looking for home tests for anti-bodies.
The FDA has prohibited those. Makes you wonder what the 'F' stands for.

Such would be brilliant and a game changer. With free home-testing we could eliminate almost overnight the shutdown of our economy.

Assuming this is a test for curiosity in the absence of any medical problem, I would only take a test if I were the only one with access to the results, or if the results were reported via a computer code, and did not have my name or address attached.
I have been highly suspicious for a long time about the push for everyone to send off their DNA. It keeps getting cheaper and cheaper. Truth is, I think they would do it for free, just to get your DNA.
I don't want my government to have my DNA.

Here's an idea- let's have the census takers do it- or the Jehovah Witnesses.

This virus fiasco has become a liberal siege. We must think accordingly. I don't believe Trump can make any pronouncement at this point that will end it. We still have state governors and local law enforcement to foul up the works. God help us. Lord, please look after my children and their families.

Seriously, let's have UPS and FedX administer the tests . Hand the tests to the resident to swab his nose/throat. Drop the sealed box into a sterile bag with a bar code on it to send it to the testing facility and send the results back to the customer as well as contact info for local help.

The drop of blood on a stick tests don't need to be sent in. They are making them so it is necessary to submit the results. One wanted me to scan the test with my phone. This bothers me. But if I already have the antibodies and am not contagious I don't need to be quarantined. Nor everyone else.

And once the test shows that you haven't been infected, you can sew a yellow star to your shirt so everyone can identify you.
Umm, no thanks!

By the time the government could somehow produce hundreds of millions of tests, the pandemic would be over.
We are showing the entire world that the United States of America can be brought to its knees by a disease that kills fewer people than cancer, heart disease, the flu and drunk drivers.
When the dust settles, will the New York Times come out and tell people to eat healthier foods and exercise, in order to eliminate those "underlying conditions?" Or will we be subjected to several years of anti-Trump vitriol?

I think home testing can play a huge role in moving forward. One thing that really stands out from this article though. The use of FEDEX as the courier service as opposed to the USPS. Perhaps this is a great analogy for the reason we are here in the first place?

what will be the end result of everybody testing? A file somewhere with your name ? Why ? the testing bs is only a snapshot . You have it or don’t when the test was done . Then a bum sneezes on you enroute home ? You got it ! Silly idea and a waste of resources . You need a test to determine treatment protocol . PS viri mutate and vaccines will have to also they are not a panacea

The problem is, not recognized by the politicized fake media, that it will take time to engineer, manufacture, and distribute accurate and easy to use diagnostic testing for this specific foreign origin virus that was unknown in the USA more then a few months ago, so that all Americans, about 325 million people, can frequently conduct those tests at home, one test won’t do the trick as a person could test negative for such a contagious virus one day and then test positive for the virus the next day or week. President Trump or nobody else can wave a magic wand and make that many tests immediately available. Chances are it is fool’s gold to believe that all Americans will be responsible enough to do those tests as prescribed, or do them at all.

This is one of those well DUH! articles. Of course everyone would like the assurance of knowing their test results. But there are serious problems to accomplishing this. First, there needs to be some idea of the reliability of the test. Home tests are not reliable yet. Second, on a world scale there are probably less than 10 million tests that have been done. There are 330 million people in the US. Producing and distributing tests will take a long time. The priority would be for the vulnerable population, first responders, hospitals, doctors offices, etc..
Frankly, by the time tests in the home might be available, there may be enough herd immunity that most people won't care. It you feel sick, you would go to the doctor and get tested.

With enough effort, a test like a home pregnancy test could be developed. Perhaps would require saliva or even a finger prick, but a simple, no equipment antibody test should be doable.
The question is: in a year will anyone even care to buy one?

#18 There is already a doctor doing the finger stick for the antibodies test in Longwood, FL.
Right now I would like to see wide distribution of masks.
