The deadly coronavirus has J.C. Penney teetering on the verge of extinction. J.C. Penney said Tuesday it will extend the closure of its stores indefinitely because of the coronavirus pandemic. A majority of hourly store workers will be temporarily furloughed beginning April 2. In the meantime, a significant portion of J.C. Penney’s corporate staff will be furloughed. Employees will not be paid, with J.C. Penney pointing to in a press release eligibility for unemployment benefits for some workers. Most of the company’s workers in its supply chain and logistics centers were furloughed on March 20, and these will continue. J.C.

I haven't been in a JCP in years. In fact I haven't been to our local large shopping mall in years. I am getting older, I am still working and there is nothing being offered I cannot find on line with delivery to my home. I do use JCP online shopping and would miss them if they close it down. A lot of companies are going under and I doubt if they will be back. I do believe we can recover but it will take years.

I suspect this will not be the only casualty, as many retail store likely don't open back.
The virus will be the rationale for many who wanted to scale-down, to do so now, and push more of their online business which is handled by warehouse distribution using UPS, FedEx and other courier companies.

I think a sneeze will kill Penney's.

JC Penny isn't the only retailer. However, I suspect once this ridiculous shutdown ends, people will want to get out and shop. Can't do that online.

I’m actually dealing with this. I go to JCP Optical, and just ordered, and paid for, new contact lenses, due to a prescription change. It seemed like it was taking a long time to be notified for pick up, so I finally called and had to leave a message. Not unusual, but I never got a call back, which is unusual. So, I called again. Same message saying they were either on the other line or busy with a client. No message about closing, or how to deal with your orders, or anything. My husband drove over there and there is a sign on the door, saying they are scheduled to reopen 4/2. That was all between yesterday and today. And, now this article. So now, they have my money, and I have no contacts and need to find a new eye doctor. I can deal with all of it, but who does that without ANY notification?

JCP has 90,000 employees. That is a lot of people out of work if all these stores close permanently. And I suspect the other retailers will not call back all their furloughed employees, definitely not soon, perhaps never. Those employees will now be unemployed in an economy in recession. There won't be any jobs available. JCP has been in business over a 100 years. I don't want to see all these stores closed permanently.

Penney's has been effectively dead since the 80's. It was revered by our parents and grandparents in the catalog sales days, but all their efforts to keep up with things have been fruitless. Their name is forever associated with old people and they will not be able to shake that. They earned their place In history along with places like Sears and Monkey Wards, but those days are over. They should remove the middle initial, it stands for Cash.
True. James Cash Penney.

JC Penny was finished about 15 or 20 years ago. Hello Amazon.

Among many. I intentionally shop at Penny's to keep them going, although at times it is frustrating, often the displays are terribly laid out and there is rarely a clerk to help you find something.

I've been working at JCP for 10 years. Yep, long enough to retire with a retired employee discount. I think the stores will open again and some of the stores will close for slow sales.
Peoples priorities have now changed. Will people want stuff that came from China?
I would tell the managers that I have the most important job in the store. I do 2 things. I put the money in the cash register and make it a pleasant experience so customers will come back and repeat.

That idiot homosexual the Board hired for CEO about 8 years ago ruined the company in 6 short months before getting escorted from the building. He spent all their cash buying junk garments to make Penney's into Old Navy, or Gap. That moron divorced their loyal base from the chain and they never came back. Truly sad, because JCPenney used to be THE place to go for modest clothing at reasonable prices.
Homosexuals ruin everything they touch.

I worked at a JC Penney store while in high school. It was the worst job I ever had. The managers were jerks and that is being kind. They fired me for stealing, what I don't know. Found out later someone else was caught and I went back to get an apology and got cold indifference. I have no ill will toward the company, just the low life's at the store I worked at. No great loss though, the JC Penny company sat on the sidelines just like Sears as Amazon took over the exact same business model Sears had...Catalog sales...only on the Internet, the rest is history.
