The United States sanctioned Russia over its Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline but Russia vowed to move forward with the project.
The $10.5 billion pipeline is slated to run from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, parallel to an existing pipeline.
The sanctions were part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which President Donald Trump signed on Dec. 20. New Zealand is going assault weapon free. Authorities in the country say more than 50,000 firearms have been handed over to the police after a nationwide gun buyback program. The Seattle Times has issued a new style guideline instructing staff to capitalize the word “Black” when referring to a culture, ethnicity or group of people, the newspaper announced Thursday evening. The word “white,” however, will remain lowercase when referring to people with “light-colored skin, especially those of European descent,” the newspaper said. The publication explained that capitalizing the term “Black” is necessary because it is a reflection of shared cultures and experiences, like foods, languages and music.” The word “white” however will remain lowercase because it merely refers to the physical description of people “whose backgrounds may spring from many different cultures,”

This week, mega-bank Goldman Sachs said it would no longer finance new oil exploration in the Arctic as part of a broader move away from fossil fuels.
Now, Gov. Mike Dunleavy says he is reconsidering whether Alaska should do business with the bank, and the Alaska Department of Revenue has already booted Goldman from a billion-dollar plan to borrow money to pay oil and gas drillers.

When teen motorcyclist Harry Dunn was killed in a road accident in the UK in August, his parents assumed the person responsible would go to jail. But it turned out the person responsible was an American, the wife of an intelligence officer working at an RAF military base. Three weeks after Dunn’s death, Ann Sacoolas returned to the United States claiming diplomatic immunity. Dunn’s parents have since been to the US to call for her return and even met with President Trump. Despite the fact that case is unlikely to be resolved, the Crown Prosecution Service has charged Sacoolas and started extradition proceedings:

Faith and Freedom Coalition chairman Ralph Reed denounced comments by the editor of a prominent Evangelical Christian magazine who called for President Trump's removal from office.
Editor-in-chief Mark Galli of "Christianity Today" said Trump's behavior is "described as immoral, accurately" and has risen "to the level where he is no longer fit to serve office" following his impeachment earlier this week.
"Ingraham Angle" host Laura Ingraham told Reed he was making his publication "irrelevant," adding that the magazine has been gradually taking on a leftward bent since it was founded by the late evangelist Billy Graham in the 1950s.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., is not expressing any remorse for former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, who was swept up in the yearslong Russia investigation.
In an interview clip released on Friday, "Firing Line" host Margaret Hoover read quotes from Page about how the Russia probe had such a negative impact, including how the FBI spying into his life "ruined his good name" and that he will "never completely have his name restored."
"Do you have any sympathy for Carter Page?" Hoover asked.
