New Zealand is going assault weapon free. Authorities in the country say more than 50,000 firearms have been handed over to the police after a nationwide gun buyback program. The initiative began after a massacre at two mosques in Christchurch which left 51 dead in March. An additional 2,700 guns were modified to make compliant with new regulations and 5,000 firearms of all types were also collected as part of a no-questions-asked amnesty. All told, the government has spent roughly $66 million on the effort.

Kiwis are too docile. Remember Charlton Heston's words: "from my cold, dead hands!"

What good has ever come from disarming law abiding citizens? Clearly criminals and despots have taken over this beautiful island nation.

I wonder if they will have a suicide vest buyback considering the Muslims have managed to disarm everyone else.

How my by you want to bet that most were guns already in police hands? I haves trouble believing Kiwis would surrender like this.

50,000 - Less than 1/3 of the amount they think are in the hands of their subjects. Lots of people basically said go pound sand.

How can you buy back something you never owned or sold in the first place? It is compensated confiscation.
I guess the irony escapes them; that anyone so law abiding they would obey an unjust law is unlikely to cause a problem in the first place.

How many of the people whom the authorities most wished would give up their guns just used their buyback money to obtain a better gun.

I always pictured New Zealand as being filled with only four-legged sheep. I now see the two-legged sheep are alive and well.

How many of those 50,000 sold to the government were rusty out hunks of metal that could never fire a bullet? This was a "Cash for Clunker Guns" Sale

I’ve got a .22 pistol made in the 1930s that I’d love to sell the government for $1,500.

Why is it a "buyback"? Were the firearms purchased from the government in the first place? If not, then it's confiscation, not a buyback.

They're not going "assault weapon" free. They are only making good people defenseless. Criminals will keep their assault weapons, that they actually use to assault people, and now are protected by the government from people they prey on.

The progressives captured New Zealand a long time ago. I visited there once and was a little surprised that the people were so… subdued. They were nice, but had been totally indoctrinated by the left. I suppose it doesn't matter much anyway. New Zealand depends on other countries for protection.

You can buy a used S&W SW9F semi automatic handgun (used) at Gun City (multiple locations in NZ) for $600-$900. You can buy a Glock 17 for $999. You need a license to own a gun in NZ, but that's it.
A seller will sell to the highest bidder. In this case it's probably going to be the gov't. When the dollars dry up they'll go back to selling market value.

Just like "Cash for Clunkers" was here, people were turning in crap cars that hadn't run in years to make some cash to help bail out the car makers. The Kiwis no doubt discovered just how pathetic these things really go when people were turning in .22 cal. snub-nose pistols, claiming they were "assault weapons."

Its been a disaster disarming decent law abiding citizens in England. Violent crime stats in London are through the roof - especially knife attacks.
