Attorneys for Oberlin College filed notice in Lorain County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday that they are appealing the verdict handed down by a Lorain County jury earlier this year in a defamation case brought by Gibson's Bakery and the Gibson family. (Snip) The college said that to pay the Gibsons damages for libel, intentional infliction of emotional distress and interference with business relationships would damage free speech on college campuses. "Left standing, the verdict could also set a troubling precedent for those institutions, like Oberlin, that are committed to respecting free speech," the statement from the college read.

I don't see a free speech issue here. Gibsons is a private institution. Are they saying that defamation laws themselves are unconstitutional? Good luck with that.

Oberlin will lose the appeal, and the judge should DOUBLE the damages. Gibson’s is the wronged party here.

As an attorney friend of mine likes to remind me, every time he had a case before an old, wise judge, the judge would have a conference with the parties and their lawyers. He had a ceramic cow on his desk and he'd point at it saying, "Now, you, the plaintiff, you've got this cow by the neck and you're pulling it as hard as you can. And, you, the defendant, you've got the cow by the tail, pulling it as hard as you can, too. But while both of you are pulling the cow, both of your lawyers are milking the cow dry."

Free speech is not HATE speech and physically attempting to shut down a private business.

Oberlin doesn't have an obligation ot protect free speech. Free speech isn't any speech, its political speech the goobernment can't suppress. A near riot mob attacking a non goobernment facility has nothing to do with goobernment suppressing free speech. One wonders if Oberlin is setting this up to hopefully get in front of an Obambi Judge some day.

Chris Canavan, chairman of the Oberlin College board of trustees, was quoted in the release saying the decision to appeal is "grounded in the board’s fiduciary responsibility to the College’s long-term financial health."
See! This has nothing whatsoever to do with free speech or constitutional rights.
This college sought to destroy a family business. That's what they did.

#9- According to the Legal Insurrection account posted earlier today, for most of the past decade Chris Canavan was Director, Global Policy Development, at Soros Fund Management, until leaving that position in September, 2019.
Wikipedia, “Soros Fund Management, LLC is a private American investment management firm. It is currently structured as a family office but formerly as a hedge fund.” It was founded by George Soros in 1969; in 2010 reported as one of the most profitable firms in the hedge fund industry; headquartered in New York.
