Very sad news indeed. I've seen these planes on tour several times. They often fly with people who contribute to the museum but can't tell if that's the case here with what information currently available. So very sad indeed,

I flew on the B-17 "Aluminum Overcast" a few years ago. Hope it's not the same one!

Re #1 I think it was the "Nine O Nine", that's the one the accompanies the B-24 Liberator "Witchcraft" on national tour. It was a beautiful plane too. I am sad beyond words at this.

This is a real shame. A rare and beautiful old bomber, apparently destroyed by fire. Glad the people got out, but the aircraft is a literally irreplaceable artifact of our history.

A few decades ago I saw a couple of beautiful aluminum skinned B-17s that flew for the Forest Service I think. Terrible to lose one this way.

I spent January, 1956 through March, 1956, at Lackland AFB, Texas, for basic training, where we had guard duty to 'protect' WWII aircraft, parked and decommissioned. (It was one of those meaningless tasks the military was good at creating.) So I have strange affection for those old birds. And it saddens me to read this item.

Not many of them flying anymore. No one who ever flew them is flying them today. And to think, we made them by the dozens per day during the War and lost them by the tens every mission.

When my father retired as an airline pilot in the early '70's, he was invited to be the co-pilot on a restored B-17 that a friend of his flew to air shows, etc. He turned down the invitation. I asked him why, and I remember his exact words: "Two reasons. Old airplanes are dangerous. And the co-pilot has to buy half the gas."

There were almost 13,000 built, about a dozen flying today. There were 13 people on board, 3 crew, 10 passengers. It is reported that 5 people were taken to the hospital. If nobody on the ground was involved, that leaves 8 unaccounted for. Sad to lose the people, and sad to lose the aircraft. I have watched this and several other B-17s fly at Oshkosh for 3 decades. Impressive old aircraft. I have been on board, but never took the flight.

Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib told Detroit’s chief of police that he should hire only black people as analysts to run their facial recognition software because, she claimed, non-black people think they all look alike. The suggestion came Monday as Chief James Craig gave Tlaib a tour of the Real Time Crime Center, where the department uses facial recognition technology to find suspects. Craig was showing Tlaib how the software works, and how analysts use it to identify and locate individuals. But the tour quickly turned contentious as the freshman Michigan congresswoman made repeated requests that were shot down by the chief.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Thursday that his country's delegation would vote for the United Nations headquarters to be moved out of New York if given the chance, in the latest sign of escalating tensions with the United States on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. “If we’re ever asked, we will, of course, vote for it, for the United Nations headquarters to be transferred to a more secure and better country that does not have the narrow viewpoints that we have been witnessing,” he said in response to a question at a press conference. There appears to be no significant movement to move the U.N.

An emotional Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib on Monday held back tears during a news conference as she and Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar condemned Israel’s recent decision to impose restrictions on visiting the country, with the Democrats calling for Congress to get involved. “We in the United States have a constructive role to play,” Omar said at the news conference in St. Paul, Minn. “We give Israel more than $3 million in aid every year. This is predicated on them being an important ally in the region, and the only democracy in the Middle East. But, denying a visit to duly elected members of Congress is not consistent with being an ally.”

The new president of El Salvador on Monday took responsibility for the June deaths of a father and daughter who drowned crossing the Rio Grande in a bid to reach the United States, saying the onus is on his government to make the country a safer place -- and one where migration is "an option, not an obligation." A photograph from the Mexican side of the river showing the body of Oscar Martinez and his daughter, Valeria, lying face down with Valeria's arms still wrapped around her father’s neck shocked the world late last month amid an already heated debate about illegal immigration in the US.

The great triumph of recent American politics is for the people of your fine country to have elected as president a man who is the precise embodiment of what supercilious Europeans think Americans are really like. Pig-ignorant, arrogant, jingoistic, contemptuous of foreigners, loud-mouthed, badly dressed and irredeemably bumptious. So consuming is the European antipathy toward Donald Trump — he’s never read a book! He eats steak with ketchup! — that it afflicts leading politicians across our continent, people who would be better advised to button it a while and show a little bit of diplomacy to the leader of the free world. But they can’t: the contempt always bleeds through.

First, it is likely that President Donald Trump violated some cockamamie administrative rule when he recently spoke with the new Ukrainian president about the potential corrupt dealings of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, in Ukraine. Fine. Can’t Trump just pay a fine or something? Yes, he should’ve been more careful (and he needs to tell Rudy Giuliani to calm down, as the former mayor risks perjuring himself before not one, but three Congressional committees). What Trump did was the equivalent of going 15 mph over the speed limit in rural Georgia: it happens. Rarely does anyone notice. Ignorance is still not a viable legal defense.
