The Trump administration on Friday took one of its most aggressive steps yet to legalize anti-transgender discrimination by telling the Supreme Court that federal law allows firing workers solely for being transgender, arguing a Michigan funeral home could fire a transgender woman because she wanted to wear women’s clothing on the job.
Although the administration was expected to take the stance — and had previously said firing workers on the basis of gender identity is legal under federal law — the latest court filing asks the nation’s top court to establish federal case law in a potentially sweeping setback for LGBTQ rights nationwide.
The case is a dispute over the word “sex.”

Epstein killed himself in his Manhattan jail cell, the city’s medical examiner’s office said on Friday, determining that the cause of death was suicide by hanging.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Friday that an injunction on President Trump's new asylum rules could only be upheld within the circuit, which includes the border states of California and Arizona.
The federal court's decision means that Texas and New Mexico will uphold Trump's strict asylum rules that forbid migrants who have traveled through more than two countries from applying for asylum. The FBI said in the report that it knew this — and of the suspicious explanation for it — but did not alert other intelligence agencies or the public, according to the report. Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke, having resumed his campaign, detailed a plan Friday to curb gun violence by imposing a national gun licensing system and registry, and a mandatory buyback program for assault weapons.

A Phoenix father is facing second degree murder charges for allegedly killing a man who allegedly harassed his young daughter. Police say Melvin Harris, 40, admitted to beating Leon Armstrong, 26, to death after he attempted to break into the teenage girl's stall at a QuikTrip convenience store bathroom. Harris was waiting for his daughter and her two friends in the store’s parking lot when Armstrong approached his car asking for money. Harris gave him change, then Armstrong walked into the convenience store, police said. Soon after, Harris' daughter and her friends came out of the store and said the man had harassed them, according to a police report.

Three San Diego residents filed a federal lawsuit today challenging California’s assault weapon ban, with the plaintiffs alleging that the state is violating its residents’ Second Amendment rights by its
allegedly misguided definition of assault weapons.
