Following the model of George H. W. Bush, Donald Trump is taking a major step toward becoming a one-term president. Bush thought he could become more popular by betraying his promises to defend the Second Amendment. Trump now feels the same; according to the New York Times, he has ordered his staff to work with Senate Republicans to pass a major gun-control package that would set the stage for gun confiscation.
Let’s remember how gun control worked out for George H. W. Bush. Like Trump, Bush had a long record of supporting some gun control; that record was part of the reason he lost the Texas Senate race

No one ever wants a psychopath to handle a weapon. Trump is trying (and may even succeed) in defining what behavior traits warrants this diagnosis. I see nothing wrong with this approach, since we all seem to have accepted background checks.
Bueller?

Trump has stated numerous times that he is working hand-in-hand with the NRA to pass legislation that the NRA has pushed for, not the Left. One would assume that if the NRA does not approve, it's a no-go.

Go ahead and elect Democrats and see how fast there will be an assault weapons ban.

It doesn't matter which politician does what, gun owners have the final say. H.W. lied on both guns and taxes, Trump hasn't lied to us about anything and I will be the last person to ever believe anything coming from the NYT. Trump's rhetoric concerning gun violence centers around mentally ill people, not guns. Building mental institutions for all of the lunatics in this country will be a major undertaking.

We already have too many gun control laws which are not targeting criminals and mass murder shooters but law abiding citizens exercising their rights to Bear Arms under the Second Amendment.
We need less gun control laws not more.
President Trump had better be very, very careful on any actions he either takes through executive order or signing any laws that further limits our Second Amendment rights. If he betrays us it is a deal breaker regarding trust and support.

There is potential great political danger to President Trump if he supports gun bans or more gun control that will adversely affect law abiding US citizen’s Second Amendment Rights. There is nothing wrong with people outside the DC political beltway notifying Trump of that fact as this article informs.

Gee whiz, the National Review is playing at being a telephone psychic. Their all-knowing crystal ball has revealed President Trump's secret desire to partner with the communists in order to disarm Americans and render the 2nd toothless. Yeah, right. /heavy sarc
I watched the NH rally last night. It was a masterpiece. Regarding the mass shootings and the usual calls for more laws on the law-abiding, he reiterated his answer at the copter presser; as a nation we must address the mental health crisis. This is classic Trump. This is how he handled the DACA issue; be open to listening to their proposals based on ideology and then offer his own based on reality. You don't really hear the Dims crying over the "dreamers" any more, do you?
I can understand the nervous nature of many posters regarding Republican presidents showing a willingness to parlay with the Dims, in the past it has been the prelude to disaster because they were all Uniparty. In the past three years, President Trump has shown consistency in his asymmetrical political warfare. He's the spider inviting the prey into his parlor and the Deep State players are the fly.

Kopel is a REAL expert on this topic, and is exaclty right. Guns is one of the biggest reasons I hate
Bush, Sr. to this day.
I have contacted the White House to tell the President that I fully support him on all he is doing, and asking him to VETO any new gun control laws that might get through Congress. I said that I don't want him to push me away and that will happen if there is any new gun control that he approves of.

#5,"since we all seem to have accepted background checks"... how many are aware enough about gun laws to know that "background checks" do NOT apply to private gun sales, by federal laws? Only to new gun sales from gun dealers. If "universal background checks" are required, this is a defacto gun registration scheme and WILL eventually lead to confiscations.
