A 79-year-old woman has been given a 10-day jail sentence after she was repeatedly cited by police for feeding stray cats in her Ohio neighbourhood. Since 2015, neighbours of Nancy Segula have been complaining to officials about the strays. She claims the cats were left behind by an ex-neighbour. "I'm a cat lover," she told Fox 8 in Cleveland, after learning of her coming term in the Cuyahoga County Jail. Mrs Segula has been ordered by a judge to begin her sentence on 11 August.

I can guarantee that those taken to the "Animal Shelter" aka "the pound" aren't receiving "3 hots and a cot" daily that Mrs Segula provided.

Have you ever had a feral cat colony in your neighborhood? She needs to see more of her son, have one spayed/neutered cat of her own and give up with what has become a nuisance. If you have ever had feral cats show up and begin to multiply you know what I am talking about. These are not pets.

22 is a pretty large colony for one caregiver and I am guessing she has not contacted help organizations in her area to have the cats spayed and neutered. Maybe this press will fix that problem.
I have worked with feral cat colonies for decades now. Priority is getting every member of the colony vetted and fixed. No question about it. No more breeding, period. It is irresponsible to act otherwise. The death rate for 6 mo and younger kittens to feral mothers is astronomical. Plus the breeding behaviors and male fighting are annoying and dangerous. Plus non-sterilized feral cats have 1/2 the life expectancy of sterilized animals. There are countless low-cost, no cost spay and neuter clinics, even mobile ones in many large to mid sized cities and even in rural areas.
We, with the approval of the local Humane groups and animal control, never rehome ferals if at all possible. We simply put the vetted and sterilized ferals back in the community they came from, assuming they have care givers and let them live out their normal life which many times does not exceed 5-7 years. If you remove ferals from their territory, more unneutered/unspayed/unvetted ferals move in and then you have to start the process all over.

Spaying or neutering feral cats does nothing to reduce the incredible toll on wildlife particularly birds. If they aren't being trapped and shipped to Baltimore or many other democrat run cities they need to be eliminated. Period..

#5 Yes, it actually does reduce the destruction of wild birds. We have witnessed this first hand in our years of work. Reduce the feral breeding cat population through trap neuter release and everything improves. The feral cat load in our neighborhoods has drastically reduced as the community has stepped up, gotten their pets sterilized, and are participating in wide spread trap neuter release programs for community ferals over the past 20 years. Spayed and neutered ferals require less energy thus less food, their need to roam is reduced as they are no long breeding, and if they are taken care of properly by caretakers, they hunt less. Simply destroying ferals leaves a void that will quickly be filled by more unsterilized cats. Properly conducted, trap neuter release breaks the cycle and maintains sterilized colonies that protect territory until they naturally die off which take many years. Having seen over these many years healthy and shrinking feral cat populations has been very satisfying.
That said, any OUTDOOR cat hunts. This is why it is best for all that our pet kitties stay indoors. I have a small feral community feeding station in my backyard as well as 5 bird feeders that regularly sees 8 different species of bird. Our neighborhood has many patches of old trees. Deforestation and loss of habitat is the greatest threat to song birds.

The cost of her 10 day stay in jail could have paid for the spaying or neutering of the cats.

If you've ever had a crazy cat lady in your neighborhood you know how trying they can be. There is no other consideration except for their blasted cats, and there are never enough. They let the cats run wild and they mess up everyone else's flower beds, bird feeders, and they howl and fight all night. They get into the trash and eat your own pet's food. You talk to the crazy cat lady and its like talking to a wall. You will always get more of what you subsidize (or feed) whether it be homeless people, illegal aliens or feral animals.
The court is now talking. She has a history of not listening to them either.

Feel sorry for the woman. She will be locked up with women who are mostly in their 20s. They'll sit around comparing notes such as what are you in for? Prostitution, drugs, theft, DUI and feeding starving cats who had no food. All of us live in different neighborhoods. In my neighborhood I rarely see dogs or cats who are not pets of one of my neighbors. I don't see my favorite animals, squirrels and chipmunks, that often. What I have is a ton of birds. Little song birds. Huge hawks and crows. Woodpeckers who think my gutters are wood. Canadian geese who think I live in Canada. Unlike birds, cats have never caused me to wash my car. I'll take a meow over a tweet anytime.

So much easier to condemn this elderly woman than reach out to help her. Offer to take them to an animal shelter for her.
We have a cat lady is older and alone. It's out of hand but nobody offered to help her vs sending the police to her home for a Well Check to upset her while animal control snatched up her cats. No case manager came in to assess her needs. She really needs to be in a nursing home. We really have a problem with Love thy neighbor today. Every man for themselves.

Cleveland, a demonrat run failed city. It stands to reason a 79 year old would have to go to jail for failure of animal control to do their job. Why punish demonrat voting overpaid do nothing civil servants when it's more convenient to jail a 79 year old. If she isn't a rich demonrat elitist, all the better.
