IMPERIAL BEACH, California — Raw sewage teeming with toxic chemicals dumped in Mexico's northern border city of Tijuana has been flowing for decades into the United States while local, state, and federal authorities in both countries have failed to prevent it. Now, those on the front lines of this crisis are saying enough is enough.Unrestrained run-offs of ugly green and brown liquids have caused both figurative and literal headaches for U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Tijuana River Valley, a stretch of land south of San Diego from where the Tijuana River flows north from downtown Tijuana into California and then west to the Pacific Ocean.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) says she has not decided whether to run for reelection, suggesting “dark money groups” have hurt her chances. “The divisiveness of our country and the unceasing attacks by dark money groups in Maine have clearly had an impact,” Collins told Bloomberg in a recent interview. “But I believe that once Mainers really focus on the race and we remind them of my being the No. 1 most bipartisan member of the Senate, and all the accomplishments that I can point to that have directly benefited the state, I’ll be fine,” she added.

This was a week the President could only have dreamed of. There was the highly promoted appearance of Robert Mueller before two congressional committees in which the impeachment dream of the party with no saleable agenda died in full public view. Egged on by Deep Staters, Guatemala had recently backed off of a deal to keep asylum seekers there, but at the end of the week thought better of reneging (after the President threatened tariffs and other responses if they didn’t follow through on the deal). The week ended with the Supreme Court green lighting the transfer of some funds from the Defense budget

Robert Mueller, like his close friend James Comey, enjoyed an undeserved reputation for bureaucratic impartiality, integrity, and excellence for many years. Both men seemed to have the skill to bamboozle Republicans with their nominal political affiliation with the Grand Old Party while operating ruthlessly and sometimes corruptly. When Robert Mueller testified before the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees last week, he shattered his reputation as a hard-working master of all the details of the operations he supervised. But the clues were always there. (snip) Robert Mueller stumbled in 2013 when Louie Gohmert (R-TX) asked him if he knew the Boston bombers attended a terrorist mosque In 2013

Imagine being a Democrat right now. You have the House, and the Republican majority in the Senate is small. In the race for the presidency, you have every advantage with the exception of incumbency. Yes, the economy is booming but there isn’t a mainstream media or cultural institution that isn’t on your side and willing to anything to help you win. All you have to do is not act crazy and you’re 99 percent of the way home. And that’s the problem, there are no longer any sane Democrats. The House hearing with Robert Mueller on Wednesday was supposed to be their shining moment, their chance

FLINT, Mich.—“Do you need me to check the sturdiness of the noodle?” Beto O’Rourke leaned over a pot of boiling water. Mae and David Collins and their 17-year-old twins had invited him over for dinner. (A nonprofit group had connected them before the candidate’s visit to Michigan last week.) The former Texas representative and not-so-long-ago Democratic sensation sat around the Collinses’ dining-room table, talking about what had gone wrong since lead poisoned their water and a generation of the city’s children—a crisis that, five years later, still hasn’t been entirely resolved. Of course, this was O’Rourke having a searching conversation, so a staffer was squeezed into the corner livestreaming

Leana Wen, now the former president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, was fired from the organization over what she calls “philosophical differences over the best way to protect reproductive health.” A few days later, she penned an op-ed in the New York Times explaining what happened and why, from her perspective. What she reveals about the organization’s goals and methodology is not only unsurprising, but confirms what conservatives have been claiming about Planned Parenthood for years. Wen first writes that while she understood Planned Parenthood certainly performed abortions, she didn’t believe that should be the organization’s primary goal. “While the traditional approach has been

There are really only two ways to consider the borders of Israel when it declared independence in May 1948: the entirety of the Palestine Mandate OR the proposed border put forward by the United Nations General Assembly in 1947. As discussed below, only one of these is legally valid, while both options demonstrate that Israel does not occupy any “Palestinian Land.” May 1948 Borders: the Palestine Mandate When the Ottoman Empire broke up, the French and British assumed control of various mandates until the local populations were able to establish their own functioning governments. The French took the Lebanon and Syrian mandates, and each of them became countries in 1943 and 1946, respectively,

What to do about the booming Trump economy is a problem the Democrats have yet to solve. Democratic presidential candidates always want to run as though it is 1932 and their mission is to end a depression, but that is hard to do when employment is at record highs, wages are rising, and in general the economy is perhaps the strongest in American history. For the most part, the Democrats’ strategy has been to change the subject. They have gone from “It’s the economy, stupid” to “The economy? Who cares?” But they can’t avoid the issue entirely. Media Post reports that the Democrats are readying a social media campaign

We hope Mr. Blackwell can take some comfort in the fact that when it comes to rats, Baltimore has got nothing on Mr. Trump’s hometown. The other day we were transferring trains

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico — A pregnant Mexican woman suffering complications was told by immigration officers that they couldn’t process her family’s asylum claim at the U.S. border on Saturday before a U.S. senator intervened to persuade the officers to take the woman to a Texas hospital. While visiting a migrant shelter Saturday, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) grew concerned about a woman who was 38 weeks pregnant and suffering from preeclampsia and other complications. The senator and his staff decided to take the woman, her husband and 3-year-old son to a port of entry to make their asylum claim. At the Paso del Norte Bridge linking

To judge by what they say and do, Democrats are obsessed with two topics: impeachment and race. With Robert Mueller’s disastrous performance driving a stake through the heart of the former, race is shaping up as a defining issue in this week’s second round of presidential debates. As a New York Times article put it, “The searing fight over race, inequality and history has come to dominate the Democratic presidential contest.” Count that as an understatement.

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico — It was the first phone call to his family back in Honduras since crossing the Texas-Mexico border, and Olvin Alexander Buezo had bad news. He wasn’t in the United States as expected. His 7-year-old son would not be attending elementary school this fall in Foley, Alabama. There would be no good-paying U.S. job to finance the $6,000 debt he incurred to pay their smuggler. “I already told [my uncle] to sell everything,” Buezo said during the brief but somber phone call to his wife on Tuesday. Their small “farm” — less than three acres — would have to go. “There’s no other way,” he said.

Robert Mueller’s testimony to Congress, by any reasonable standard, should have been the swan song of the impeachment movement. To state the obvious, there is no evidence that President Trump or any other American probed by the Mueller investigation conspired with the Russian government to influence the 2016 presidential election. At worst, both campaigns were willing to take research on their opponents fed by Russians. On this score, it appears the Clinton campaign was far more successful, though the use of disguised campaign funds for this purpose has not yet been probed.

Law enforcement and school officials have defended 21 months of secrecy around the murder investigation of a Panorama High School student at the hands of MS-13 — one part of a grisly rampage that has generated national headlines and left at least 10 people dead. They said there was no need to alert teachers, parents and students because other students were never in danger, the gang had little presence on campus, and no acts of gang violence affected the campus itself. But a month before the October 2017 off-campus slaying of Brayan Andino, another incident linked to MS-13 erupted at the edge of the San Fernando Valley campus. At least two MS-13 members,
