The deal to avert tariffs that President Trump announced with great fanfare on Friday night consists largely of actions that Mexico had already promised to take in prior discussions with the United States over the past several months, according to officials from both countries who are familiar with the negotiations.
Friday’s joint declaration says Mexico agreed to the “deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border.” But the Mexican government had already pledged to do that in March during secret talks in Miami between Kirstjen Nielsen, then the secretary of homeland security, and Olga Sanchez, the Mexican secretary of the interior, the officials said.

Either that’s a lie or Mexico is reneging which required the Tariff threat. We should see results by the end of July.

Key word is promising, just like our previous presidents and politicians.

If this was true, why did the number of illegals crossing into America increase in those same past several months? How did East Africans make it through Mexico undetected until they crossed the border? It's the New York Slimes, so I'll pass on this story!

Pledge, schmedge. There was no agreement. Maybe just talk. We know Nielsen was a walky-talky wimp who was good at the mic but never produced results. Mexico had done ZERO and more illegals were pouring in...
I wouldn’t trust Haberman if she told me today was Sunday.
I have a hunch Nielsen and maybe others are doing CYAs with the favorite paper of those who need to do that. The NYT.

This is the current spin factory spewing the leftwing talking points. First it was that Trump caved and rabn away when Mexico suddenly "grew a spine" and called his buffoonish bluff.
That didn't work because as bad as the current state of public education the vast majority of sentient humans saw what a pack of rubbish that was.
Now its that Trump was stupid enough to agree to what was already agreed to and run away to suck his thumb. I don't think most citizens with an IQ above room temperature wull buy this one either.
Lots of countries make pledges to do things and then never do them (see Paris Accords or the Iran deal, or any agreement with the Norks or CHina to see how often this happens) Unless there is a serious threat of harm and a leader who can be trusted to carry out that threat nothing ever comes of these agreements.
No matter how hard the left tries to spin this it is a major Trump victory.

Three frogs are sitting on a log. One 'Pledges' to jump off. How many frogs are still sitting on that log? Answer: Three.
The agreement was signed on Friday night. To assume it wasn't discussed prior to that, is ridiculous. To downplay the President's accomplishment here is childish, and could have been expected from all who have TDS. Now let's see if they do as they said they would!

Obviously Mexico did not do what they promised to do months ago, the numbers of illegal aliens crossing the borderline entering the USA this past month clearly show that. Mexico is used to promising past US Presidents all sorts of things with “a wink and a nod” and then not following through, especially when it comes to borderline matters. That’s why President Trump threatened to hit Mexican exports with a tariff if Mexico doesn't start following through on their promises
So now, as President Trump always says, we will see what happens.

Yes it was reported some time back that they did say that but never did it. I think they have a lot more incentive to do what they agreed to this time. If they don't, Trump should slap them with a 10% tariff to start with and work up.

Yes, they did, but the president said it wasn't enough at the time. The new agreement has this and much more in it, enforced by the threat of tariffs. The NYT can't do impartial news anymore. And why post articles from such a fringe source?

Was there a signed agreement with Mexico last December?
Has Mexico taken action since last December that has significantly improved the situation at the border?
NOW there IS a signed agreement with Mexico.
Time will tell whether Mexico lives up to their obligations under the NEWLY SIGNED agreement and whether or not significant improvements result.
The threat of tariffs IS new and likely to continue to be effective.
What has Pelosi and the Democrat-controlled House accomplished in making much-needed changes to US immigration law?
As usual, the New York Times bias is strikingly obvious.

More fake news from the "Newspaper of record". The only record that the NYT has is for disseminating pure liberal propaganda.

Lame NY Times, lame! Mexico said they would stop the caravans, but it was just words until Trump threatened them with tariffs. The truth is the Times does not want to give Trump any credit, so we get lame stories like this.

If Mexico agreed to terms months ago, then they didn't follow through with their end of the agreement. Hence the threat of tariffs. Now they have a reason to follow through, because Trump will be watching.

First, it is the NYT and I don't believe anything that rag puts out, especially when Haberman is involved. Second, even if true, the Mexicans weren't doing anything they supposedly had promised to do. Now, after a threat of tariffs, we have a written agreement that can be enforces, whereas, promises mean nothing to the Mexicans.

Maybe Mexico did and maybe it didn't. I would not believe the NYT even on biblical oath. I believe President Trump hasn't lied to us, therefore, his explanation is the one I believe.

I do not know if the New York Times is a fan of Obama because I never read The Times, but I wonder what the paper's editors would write if Obama accomplished even ten percent of what President Trump has accomplished.
