Trump rejects the War Powers Resolution

Original Article

In 1973, when Nixon was winding down the Vietnam War, Congress enacted the War Powers Resolution. The Democrats backing the resolution held veto-proof majorities in both chambers of Congress. Nixon’s veto was symbolic only. The Resolution puts the president on a clock: He has 48 hours after initiating an armed conflict to notify Congress, and after 60 days, unless Congress gives him permission, he must end the military action. Today, President Trump has declared war on the War Powers Resolution, saying that Congress cannot constrain his constitutional role as commander in chief and executive over foreign policy.

I gave very mixed opinions on this. On one hand, a president should not have the unilateral authority to hypothetically wage unrestricted and unlimited warfare against anyone, anywhere for any reason. So, in principle. I dont have an issue with reasonable restrictions. Which begs the question: when democrats held veto proof majorities, why didn't the put this out as a constitutional amendment. My other thought.. if I believed that "congress" had the best interests of the people at heart, the War Powers Act would seem reasonable. However, since Vietnam, the democrat congressmen have never acted for the benefit of the people, but only for their short term political gain. Sure, democrats were all in on going to war with Afghanistan. For about a week. Then they immediately turned on Bush, blaming him for 911. Which leaves me with viewing the War Powers act favorably.....but not trusting democrats to act reasonably. If we had honor and integrity in Washington, this wouldn't be a question.

There has been numerous recent decisions by SCOTUS that CLEARLY state that laws passed by Congress and signed by past Presidents CANNOT override Constitutional assignment of duties to the President. Such changes would require a Constitutional amendment, which is highly unlikely they will get. Trump is right to challenge this "law". If the dems are smart, they won't take any official action against the war because if they do and they lose, they lose control of a roadblock that they like to keep tossing up in front of Republican Presidents. The next time a Conservative President wanted to take military action, the dems would be toothless.

By this reasoning I am reminded of this: William Roper: “So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law!” Sir Thomas More: “Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?” William Roper: “Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!” Sir Thomas More: “Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down, and you're just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!” ― Robert Bolt, A Man for All Seasons: A Play in Two Acts Disregard and lay low the laws of this land at your own peril friends for when the devils round on us (and they will in time), what will be left to provide us shelter and comfort and justice?

This bill was misnamed. It should have been named the “Benedict Arnold” bill, because if invoked, it guarantees defeat of the United States in any military conflict. Before the start of this conflict, Iran had declared they were 2 weeks away from having a nuclear bomb, making them an existential threat to the United States. To invoke this resolution now is insane.

I'm with #1 and #7 and grateful for both. There is a difference between using American armed forces and washing war. War involves a higher level of commitment, a broader scope and duration, and does require a Constitutional declaration. Congress has allowed presidents to usurp its sole authority and responsibility to declare war because either 1. they agreed with the president's policies but didn't want the responsibility, or 2. they opposed the president's policy but wanted him to go forward so they could undermine him. Korea was an example of 1. (American soldiers had been attacked, after all); Viet Nam started as as 1. and became an example of 2. over time. In both cases war should have been formally declared, if only to force a more serious consideration of who the war was against and what actual objectives were Iran is an example of 1. based on its objectives but periodically shifts back into 2. mode based on its execution (as Reply #2 wisely points out). I believe a formal declaration of war against the Islamic Republic of Iran is both justified and required. It would be good for America to re-learn how and when to declare war, as opposed to just fighting wars under false pretenses.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday rejected Iran’s latest proposal to end its war with the US and Israel, calling it unacceptable. The 14-point proposal reportedly includes multiple stages of negotiations, with the sides first bringing the fighting to a close and opening the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days. The US and Iran would only later begin talks on Tehran’s nuclear program, according to reports on the Iranian terms. The offer also reportedly floats an up to 15-year freeze on nuclear enrichment, followed by curbs on the program. “It’s not acceptable to me. I’ve studied it, I’ve studied everything – it’s not acceptable,”

Sometimes you have to wonder what the point of fighting the decline of Western Civilization is. It seems inevitable, and enough people seem to tolerate it that it's easy to think about giving up, moving someplace where the deterioration will take longer or be avoided by a large enough concentration of people who share our values, so sanity will prevail. I continue to believe this attitude is wrong, morally, strategically, and tactically. It may be tempting to go down that path, but we are not put on this Earth to do easy things; we are put here to do important things, which are often hard.

The Supreme Court's bombshell ruling striking down racial gerrymandering under the Voting Rights Act sent shockwaves through the political landscape this week — and Southern Republican governors wasted no time acting on it. For Democrats, who have spent years leaning on race-based district engineering to protect their congressional seats, the timing couldn't be worse. Alabama and Tennessee both called special legislative sessions on Friday to redraw their congressional maps, and the dominoes are already starting to fall across the South. Alabama Gov. They’ve mostly abandoned “if it bleeds, it leads” reporting to increase audience size. Minimal muckraking on the shooter. Minimal finger-pointing on failed responsibilities,
