From Ogaden to Minneapolis: Somalia’s
Chaos Didn’t Stay There

This may sound like a Kevin Bacon-style degree-of-separation connection, but please bear with me. I'm going to try to connect a dumb decision in 1977 that ultimately led to Somali immigration to Minneapolis. Essentially, it was a period of chaos that led to corruption. When Siad Barre ordered the invasion of Ogaden in 1977, the objective seemed straightforward: seize territory and unite ethnic Somalis under a single flag. Somali forces quickly advanced; however, the support Barre expected from the Soviet Union shifted to Ethiopia, followed by Cuban troops entering the fight, and the offensive collapsed.

Good summary of Somalis getting to Minnesota. But he left out a key point. By the 1990s the MN Democrat party (called DFL) was losing its grip on the state. Republicans were winning some statewide races including governor and a Senate seat. Dems needed new voters and fast. By the 2000s there were tens of thousands of Somalis pouring into the state and almost uniformly voting Democrat. It was enough to tip the balance in every single statewide election for the past 20 years.

What if social media were treated like tobacco? It might sound like a fantasy, but it’s closer to reality than you might think. Last year, Australia became the first country to ban social media for minors. The law passed the Australian parliament by an overwhelming margin and was wildly popular among Australian adults. Taking a cue, the European Union released an app enabling age verification on social platforms, while a handful of European nations are mulling Australia-style bans. The Canadian government is “very seriously” considering mandatory age limits, while even here in America, the Massachusetts state house recently voted to ban social media for children under 14.

The state of Alabama is set to begin a special session on Monday that would enable legislators to draw a new map that further favors Republicans after the Supreme Court ruling on the Voting Rights Act on Thursday. Alabama’s Governor Kay Ivey called the special session to look into possibilities of expanding the GOP majority in the state. Proposals have circulated online which include both a one and two seat pick up for Republicans ahead of the vital midterm elections in November.

So-Called Moderates

Critics often frame Iranian politics as a struggle between moderates and hardliners, but this distinction has repeatedly proven disastrously misleading. Different styles may appear, but the overarching objective remains the same: preserving the Islamist regime of Iran to continue jihad (holy war). Softer rhetoric has emerged when the regime needed economic rescue or a diplomatic opening. Once the pressure recedes, the underlying strategic behavior remains unchanged. In many ways, so-called "moderates" have historically served as the most effective guardians of the system: they are able to secure concessions from the outside world while preserving the internal order.

President Donald Trump announced that roughly 300,000 illegal aliens in the United States have been removed from Social Security rolls, and added that 100,000 have been removed from Medicare. While speaking at The Villages in Florida, Trump highlighted policies geared towards seniors such as No Tax on Social Security. Trump also spoke about the One Big, Beautiful Bill and how it was “the largest tax cut in American history,” adding that “as a result, more than 51 million American seniors now pay a federal tax rate of zero.” “Together with the Republicans in Congress, we’ve removed nearly 300,000 illegal aliens from the Social Security roll,” Trump said.

President Trump could be preparing a final blow against the Iranian regime, with just 24 hours left before the War Powers Resolution’s 60-day clock expires Friday night. The president told reporters Thursday that, despite the regime’s aggressive posturing, it is privately begging a deal behind closed doors. If the regime instead chooses to continue fighting, the president has been briefed by Central Command on the potential use of a new type of weapon, as well as final military plans the U.S. could pursue to bring the conflict to a definite end.

On Friday, Donald Trump signed a new executive order that builds on his January national emergency declaration that Cuba is an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United States due its ties to adversaries like Russia, China, and Iran and terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. This EO allows the United States to expand current sanctions and add new restrictions under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Specifically, it "imposes new sanctions on entities, persons, or affiliates that support the Cuban regime’s security apparatus, are complicit in government corruption or serious human rights violations, or are agents, officials, or material supporters of the Cuban government."
The Truth about Immigration from the Global South 5 replies

For decades, discussions surrounding mass immigration into Western nations have largely been confined to two unproductive viewpoints. One perspective, which views culture as a superficial element and asserts the fundamental similarity of all human beings, suggests that immigrants primarily require sufficient time and opportunities to integrate. Conversely, the other attributes assimilation challenges to cultural values, patriarchal attitudes, or religious conservatism. Both approaches, however, exhibit an intellectual reluctance to delve deeper. What remains conspicuously absent from the prevailing discourse is an understanding rooted in developmental psychology and civilization theory. This framework offers significant explanatory power while avoiding genetic determinism and simplistic cultural explanations, yet it still presents genuinely uncomfortable truths.

Here are two quotations, one from Donald Trump this week and one from Thomas Jefferson. I won’t tell you which is which. Here’s the first: “For nearly two centuries before the revolution, this land [America] was settled and forged by men and women who bore in their souls the blood and noble spirit of the British. Here on a wild and untamed continent, they set loose the ancient English love of liberty and Great Britain’s distinctive sense of glory, destiny, and pride.” And the second: “The American founding was the culmination of hundreds of years of thought, struggle, sweat, blood, and sacrifice on both sides of the Atlantic.

CNN's senior data analyst, Harry Enten, had a bit of a surprise on Thursday about President Donald Trump's numbers. "I think what we’re seeing right now in the numbers is President Trump and the Republican Party are chipping away at the long-term advantage that Democrats have had with black voters, with African-Americans," Enten said. He explained how Trump had been at 12 percent with black voters, "He’s gaining — he’s gaining ground with African-Americans. He’s up to 16 percent at this point." One has to think that these numbers are going to make Democrats very nervous. And they would be right to be nervous.

Mental Health Awareness Is Backfiring:

For decades, the mental health industry and its allies in media, government, and education have operated on a simple assumption: the more mental health awareness we spread, through campaigns, school programs, social media, and public service announcements, the better. Raise awareness, reduce stigma, encourage help-seeking, and mental health will surely improve. New evidence shows the opposite is happening. Well-intentioned awareness efforts are actively backfiring, manufacturing distress, inflating diagnoses, and turning normal human emotions into chronic “disorders.” The shocking result is that these campaigns are turning mentally fit people into self-diagnosed mentally ill patients, with symptoms effectively “contracted” from the awareness messages themselves.

Do you ever wonder why so many Blue states refuse to hand over their voter rolls to the federal government? After all, there is a federal law that requires certain measures to ensure ballot integrity, passed in the wake of the 2000 Florida debacle. It requires, among other things, that states clean their voter rolls of ineligible voters. But these states refuse to do that, and they refuse to show that they aren't breaking federal law. Of course, every sentient person knows exactly why they do both of those things: they cheat, and want to make it as hard as possible to detect the cheating, and almost impossible to audit elections

The United States has been reassessing the force strength our military maintains around the world, under Secretary of War Pete Hegseth in President Trump's second term, and it is now acting on that review, according to new reporting on Friday: President Trump ordered the Pentagon on Friday to withdraw about 5,000 U.S. service members from Germany amid his public feud with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The redeployment of troops will bring the number of service members roughly to pre-2022 levels and will affect a brigade combat team and potentially other U.S. forces already in Germany, according to a senior Pentagon official.

Some in Congress are pushing ahead with proposed reforms of the organ donation industry. That, after a bipartisan investigation exposed shortfalls, abuses, and even dangers. Since 1988, more than half a million U.S. organ donors have made 1.1 million transplants possible. 170 million Americans are registered donors, yet more than 100,000 people still wait. Organ Procurement Organizations, OPOs, are nonprofits tasked with managing removal and transfer. As an industry insider, Nycki Martin became a whistleblower. Sen. Elizabeth Warren was not happy when the Senate Banking Committee voted to advance Kevin Warsh’s nomination to lead the Federal Reserve, saying it would amount to a takeover of the Fed by President Donald Trump. No surprise there. For today’s Democrats, everything Trump does is either illegal, a threat to Democracy, or fascistic. But then Warren said that “The Trump economy is in real trouble. Inflation is up, job creation is down. The stink of stagflation is in the air, and President Trump is getting desperate.” Is any of that true?
