This may sound like a Kevin Bacon-style degree-of-separation connection, but please bear with me. I'm going to try to connect a dumb decision in 1977 that ultimately led to Somali immigration to Minneapolis. Essentially, it was a period of chaos that led to corruption. When Siad Barre ordered the invasion of Ogaden in 1977, the objective seemed straightforward: seize territory and unite ethnic Somalis under a single flag. Somali forces quickly advanced; however, the support Barre expected from the Soviet Union shifted to Ethiopia, followed by Cuban troops entering the fight, and the offensive collapsed.

It might sound like a fantasy, but it’s closer to reality than you might think. Last year, Australia became the first country to ban social media for minors. The law passed the Australian parliament by an overwhelming margin and was wildly popular among Australian adults.
Taking a cue, the European Union released an app enabling age verification on social platforms, while a handful of European nations are mulling Australia-style bans. The Canadian government is “very seriously” considering mandatory age limits, while even here in America, the Massachusetts state house recently voted to ban social media for children under 14.
The state of Alabama is set to begin a special session on Monday that would enable legislators to draw a new map that further favors Republicans after the Supreme Court ruling on the Voting Rights Act on Thursday. Alabama’s Governor Kay Ivey called the special session to look into possibilities of expanding the GOP majority in the state. Proposals have circulated online which include both a one and two seat pick up for Republicans ahead of the vital midterm elections in November.
Critics often frame Iranian politics as a struggle between moderates and hardliners, but this distinction has repeatedly proven disastrously misleading. Different styles may appear, but the overarching objective remains the same: preserving the Islamist regime of Iran to continue jihad (holy war).
Softer rhetoric has emerged when the regime needed economic rescue or a diplomatic opening. Once the pressure recedes, the underlying strategic behavior remains unchanged.

On Friday, Donald Trump signed a new executive order that builds on his January national emergency declaration that Cuba is an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United States due its ties to adversaries like Russia, China, and Iran and terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. This EO allows the United States to expand current sanctions and add new restrictions under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Specifically, it "imposes new sanctions on entities, persons, or affiliates that support the Cuban regime’s security apparatus, are complicit in government corruption or serious human rights violations, or are agents, officials, or material supporters of the Cuban government."
For decades, discussions surrounding mass immigration into Western nations have largely been confined to two unproductive viewpoints. One perspective, which views culture as a superficial element and asserts the fundamental similarity of all human beings, suggests that immigrants primarily require sufficient time and opportunities to integrate. Conversely, the other attributes assimilation challenges to cultural values, patriarchal attitudes, or religious conservatism. Both approaches, however, exhibit an intellectual reluctance to delve deeper. What remains conspicuously absent from the prevailing discourse is an understanding rooted in developmental psychology and civilization theory. This framework offers significant explanatory power while avoiding genetic determinism and simplistic cultural explanations, yet it still presents genuinely uncomfortable truths.

Here’s the first: “For nearly two centuries before the revolution, this land [America] was settled and forged by men and women who bore in their souls the blood and noble spirit of the British. And the second: “The American founding was the culmination of hundreds of years of thought, struggle, sweat, blood, and sacrifice on both sides of the Atlantic.
CNN's senior data analyst, Harry Enten, had a bit of a surprise on Thursday about President Donald Trump's numbers.
"I think what we’re seeing right now in the numbers is President Trump and the Republican Party are chipping away at the long-term advantage that Democrats have had with black voters, with African-Americans," Enten said.
He explained how Trump had been at 12 percent with black voters, "He’s gaining — he’s gaining ground with African-Americans. He’s up to 16 percent at this point."
One has to think that these numbers are going to make Democrats very nervous. And they would be right to be nervous.

Henrilynn Ibezim, a former Democratic mayoral candidate in New Jersey, pleaded guilty to forging nearly 1,000 voter registration applications during the 2021 Democratic primary, New Jersey’s Office of the Attorney General announced Thursday.
During the 2021 Democratic primary for Plainfield, New Jersey’s mayoral seat, Ibezim allegedly brought a garbage bag filled with around 1,000 falsified voter registration applications to a post office in Elizabeth, New Jersey, with the intention of mailing them to Union County’s registration commissioner.
Of the 1,000 applications, most were completed with the handwriting of only three or four people, according to the attorney general.
