The Social Media Age Is Over, but America

What if social media were treated like tobacco? It might sound like a fantasy, but it’s closer to reality than you might think. Last year, Australia became the first country to ban social media for minors. The law passed the Australian parliament by an overwhelming margin and was wildly popular among Australian adults. Taking a cue, the European Union released an app enabling age verification on social platforms, while a handful of European nations are mulling Australia-style bans. The Canadian government is “very seriously” considering mandatory age limits, while even here in America, the Massachusetts state house recently voted to ban social media for children under 14.

FTA, the third sentence - "Last year, Australia became the first country to ban social media for minors." Well, isn't this interesting. And in the socialist republic of Australia, of all places. Not exactly sure how young people would be prevented from using SM, but worth a try. Best thing to do is not spoil your kids with that top-of-the-line cell phone until they are old enough to understand things. Or if they are caught doing SM with their cell phone, immediately smash it with a hammer.

Now, can we do adults? I know a few who are over retirement age and are completely addicted to Facebook in particular, spending as much as 6-8 hours a day there. Sometimes wisdom doesn’t come with age.

I think the article misses the point that the West, particularly Europe, Canada, and Australia, are increasingly restricting speech and looking more like China and other like restrictive governments, putting government controls on what people can say publicly. This is a stepping stone to more restrictions -- being allowed to do this, then it's okay to do that.

What a ridiculous article. Social media in the U.S. already has restrictions that state those 13 and younger are prohibited from using it. Kids easily find a way around it, and raising the age limit to 100 won't stop it!

It's not just social media, raw porn can be accessed by anyone with a cell phone, laptop or desktop. There are also websites that cater peoples' worst instincts. Forums with people wishing the President dead etc. I am afraid that the genie is out of the bottle and too many of those genies are malevolent and violent. This is now up to parents. Government will be no help here and even if they tried, the laws would have to be so Draconian it would give the government even more power over our lives...monitoring our internet chatter, sites we visit (Lucianne)? Emails, texts etc. All for the "good of the children"

There is so much BS out on the internet these days. What makes it worse is how many people believe what they are reading. It's easy to trick the gullible and naive. The real trick is to con intelligent people who are on the lookout for garbage. See alot of intelligent people getting fooled too. The people putting out this BS are nothing more than trolls IMO.

When the subject is problems caused by media, there's a reason authoritarians of all stripes focus on the one medium that enables average citizens to express their views.

Rather than restricting social media at this time, I would much rather 'adults' stop indoctrinating prepubescent children into the homosexual lifestyle, while pushing sex change operations on 5 year olds who think they're boys/girls, instead of who they really are.

How is television any different from social media? It's all mostly garbage but some is useful information or actual entertainment. No matter how people access any or all of that information, it is protected by the First Amendment and it is up to parents to filter what their children have access to. If adults are addicted to either medium, it's their problem or their family's problem, not the government's.

My colleague Ward Clark reported earlier on Saturday on how Spirit Airlines had finally gone under, after being in financial trouble for years. But as his story noted, one of the big things that may have contributed to their demise was that the Biden administration moved to block a merger with JetBlue that might have helped both companies: As Ward also wrote, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) was the brainchild of Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who celebrated the blocking of the merger in 2024 as a "Biden win for flyers."

President Trump unleashed a fiery but mostly peaceful attack on Democrats Sunday evening, branding them “human garbage” for their latest desperate scheme to meddle in the upcoming midterms. Trump, in a post on his Truth Social media platform, tore into Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Barack Obama’s former Attorney General Eric Holder after the latter was added to a highly partisan, deceptively named “voter integrity” task force. Holder, of course, has been a driving force behind the Democrat party's obsession with rigging the electoral map through his and Obama's “Redistricting U.” operation since 2016. Some of the most infamous killers in history, including John Lennon assassin Mark David Chapman and “Son of Sam” serial murderer David Berkowitz, could soon be freed if Albany passes a pair of woke parole bills, critics warn. The Elder Parole bill would let violent criminals dodge their minimum sentences, regardless of how heinous their crimes, and be granted early parole hearings after they’ve turned 55 and served 15 years of their sentences. A second lefty measure, the Fair and Timely Parole bill, would require the state parole board to release convicts regardless of the severity of their crimes unless they are a “current” danger to the public

Critics often frame Iranian politics as a struggle between moderates and hardliners, but this distinction has repeatedly proven disastrously misleading. Different styles may appear, but the overarching objective remains the same: preserving the Islamist regime of Iran to continue jihad (holy war). Softer rhetoric has emerged when the regime needed economic rescue or a diplomatic opening. Once the pressure recedes, the underlying strategic behavior remains unchanged. In many ways, so-called "moderates" have historically served as the most effective guardians of the system: they are able to secure concessions from the outside world while preserving the internal order.

The president told reporters Thursday that, despite the regime’s aggressive posturing, it is privately begging a deal behind closed doors. If the regime instead chooses to continue fighting, the president has been briefed by Central Command on the potential use of a new type of weapon, as well as final military plans the U.S. could pursue to bring the conflict to a definite end.

This may sound like a Kevin Bacon-style degree-of-separation connection, but please bear with me. I'm going to try to connect a dumb decision in 1977 that ultimately led to Somali immigration to Minneapolis. Essentially, it was a period of chaos that led to corruption. When Siad Barre ordered the invasion of Ogaden in 1977, the objective seemed straightforward: seize territory and unite ethnic Somalis under a single flag. Somali forces quickly advanced; however, the support Barre expected from the Soviet Union shifted to Ethiopia, followed by Cuban troops entering the fight, and the offensive collapsed.

On Friday, Donald Trump signed a new executive order that builds on his January national emergency declaration that Cuba is an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to the United States due its ties to adversaries like Russia, China, and Iran and terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. This EO allows the United States to expand current sanctions and add new restrictions under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Specifically, it "imposes new sanctions on entities, persons, or affiliates that support the Cuban regime’s security apparatus, are complicit in government corruption or serious human rights violations, or are agents, officials, or material supporters of the Cuban government."
The Truth about Immigration from the Global South 5 replies

For decades, discussions surrounding mass immigration into Western nations have largely been confined to two unproductive viewpoints. One perspective, which views culture as a superficial element and asserts the fundamental similarity of all human beings, suggests that immigrants primarily require sufficient time and opportunities to integrate. Conversely, the other attributes assimilation challenges to cultural values, patriarchal attitudes, or religious conservatism. Both approaches, however, exhibit an intellectual reluctance to delve deeper. What remains conspicuously absent from the prevailing discourse is an understanding rooted in developmental psychology and civilization theory. This framework offers significant explanatory power while avoiding genetic determinism and simplistic cultural explanations, yet it still presents genuinely uncomfortable truths.

Here’s the first: “For nearly two centuries before the revolution, this land [America] was settled and forged by men and women who bore in their souls the blood and noble spirit of the British. Here on a wild and untamed continent, they set loose the ancient English love of liberty and Great Britain’s distinctive sense of glory, destiny, and pride.” And the second: “The American founding was the culmination of hundreds of years of thought, struggle, sweat, blood, and sacrifice on both sides of the Atlantic.

A large Roman Catholic diocese pushed back at criticism Friday after Pope Leo XIV appointed a former illegal immigrant as a bishop amid heightened tensions between the Vatican and Washington over refugees and ICE enforcement. Leo nominated Bishop Evelio Menjivar-Ayala as bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, which covers all of West Virginia. Menjivar-Ayala originally arrived in San Ysidro, California, smuggled in a car trunk after making several prior attempts as a teenager to flee guerrilla war-torn El Salvador. The bishop has also been critical of increased immigration enforcement measures, calling them a human rights concern and responding directly to critiques of the church from fellow Catholics in the Trump administration ...

We were originally referred to as "baby boomers," the generation born in the immediate aftermath of World War II. From 1946 to 1964, the U.S. Census Bureau tells us that more than 76 million babies were born. Why 1964 as a cutoff point? That's the year that the birth control pill was introduced in the U.S., and the birth rate began to decline. Today, we're simply referred to as "Boomers." We grew up in a period of massive wealth creation, painful social change, and the specter of nuclear annihilation hanging over our heads. All of that impacted our worldview and led to a mixed record of accomplishments

Yet the constant drumbeat continues: there are jihad attacks around the world virtually every day, and increasingly in the United States.
