Federal court blocks Texas from using
new congressional gerrymander in 2026 midterms

Original Article

Texas cannot use its new congressional map for the 2026 election and will instead need to stick with the lines passed in 2021, a three-judge panel ruled Tuesday. The decision is a major blow for Republicans, in Texas and nationally, who pushed through this unusual mid-decade redistricting at the behest of President Donald Trump. They were hoping the new map would yield control of 30 of the state’s 38 congressional districts — up from the 25 they currently hold — and help protect the narrow GOP majority in the U.S. House.

Comments:

But California will be upheld, right?

Can’t there be an expedited appeal to the SCOTUS. The Constitution gives deference to State legislatures which are supposed to carry the residual rights retained by the People.

FTA: "They were hoping the new map would yield control of 30 of the state’s 38 congressional districts — up from the 25 they currently hold." So, it would only be a gain of 5 R seats in the House on the new map. But those 5 seats were enough to trigger Bryl Cream Newsom with Prop 50 in CA and all other dem redistricting efforts into a frenzy going into the midterms. (BTW, thanks for nothing, spineless RINOs in Indiana). SCOTUS will need to intervene post haste with an 8 December deadline to overturn.

The whole concept is absolutely crooked and disenfranchises a whole lot of people. There are some states with no republican representation at all, but nobody cares because the rot is so systemic. I'd like to see some sort of geometric grid that takes into account population but not party. Densely populated areas would have smaller squares, more sparse areas would have larger ones. Each square would have one rep.

Why do they not use existing postal zip codes as boundary guides, balanced by combining small population zips w/others, or dividing large ones? Seems unbiased to me.

The irony of this activist judge ploy is amusing. They rejected the map because it was racially motivated. So now, not concentrating black votes in districts to comply with the 1964 Civil Rights Act is "racially motivated." Hopefully, this will be overturned by the SCOTUS when they strike down the election gerrymandering language in the act.

Of course, this was an inevitable sleight of hand by Dems - they planned this and had it on the back burner while they waited for CA's Prop 50 to be tested at the ballot-box. I'm still not sure - wasn't Abbott's action intended to rebalance the electoral districts and resulting representation to more closely match the state's party makeup (and then Newscum dreamed up the in-your-face Prop 50 to toss a hand grenade into CA Republicans' dreams of growing strength)?

If so, then a Federal Judge needs to declare the state of California the complete jerrimandered dictatorship that it has become and make it get rid of all its partisan election rigging. A legal precedent has been established.

Lester Maddox suggested the districts be drawn geometrically as near to circles as possible. With no regard to race nor anything else. The courts turned him down in preference to districts drawn based on race. But Lester was the one that was called the racist.

I guess Texas doesn’t know that only Democrats are allowed to gerrymander districts. This is how they protect democracy by putting a big fat thumb on the scale to get more Democrats elected.

A federal grand jury in Miami indicted Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-FL, and several co-defendants with stealing federal disaster funds, laundering the proceeds, and using the money to support her 2021 congressional campaign. Court records say that Cherfilus-McCormick, 46, and her brother Edwin Cherfilus, 51, both of Miramar, worked through their family health-care company on a FEMA-funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract in 2021. In July 2021, the company received an overpayment of $5 million in FEMA funds. The indictment alleges that the defendants conspired to steal that $5 million and routed it through multiple accounts to disguise its source.
