California’s unfinished wildlife ‘bridge
to nowhere’ tops $100M

In 2022, California Gov. Gavin Newsom broke ground on the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing (WAWC), a project featuring an overpass for animals atop ten lanes of the 101 Freeway in Southern California. At the ceremony, Newsom boasted that the state had committed $54 million. He promised to “complete the job within another $10 million,” before seeming to hedge on whether that final sum would do the trick. Officials projected a 2025 completion date for the overpass, and estimated that the entire project — which includes the bridge and other ancillary developments — would cost $92 million, some of it coming from private philanthropists.

Using 'local dirt' to ensure the diversity of the mountain lions. Reminds one of the high-speed rail project.

Stuck on stupid. Wallis could have paid for it. A few wild animals were killed while trying to cross the freeway. They'd have figured it out.

What do ya bet the thing actually attracts MORE wildlife to the area, not all of whom will get the idea to stay on the bridge?

These can work well in Wyoming where the primary species is antelope. Little known fact, antelope will NOT jump a fence. Deer and elk jump them without hesitation, unless they are too high to jump. Even a regular 4 strand barbed wire fence is a serious barrier for antelope, they either slide under (I've seen it, looks painful as they push up the lower strand of barbed wire. My point is that when you have a lot of antelope, like western Wyoming, this makes sense, otherwise the range is seriously cut up. The antelope quickly figure it out, since the ones that I have seen are pretty wide, actually a short road tunnel with very wide radius entrances with brush and fences to keep the antelope moving in the right direction. And they are very simple...dirt and grass, a fence on the edges to keep the antelope in. I guess that deer and elk might use it too, but the primary purpose was for antelope. And these are in rural areas of western Wyoming with a LOT of antelope who need to move seasonally for grazing land. Wyoming says that they can cost "up to $4 million" in their Fish and Game site. The image of this SoCal monstrosity shows a ridiculously complex stream bed and multi plant environment created on the top. Tall fences to keep the wildlife off the freeway would seem a smarter choice. In a densely urban area like this, it's a bad idea. In California....I really wonder if this makes any sense at all.

Finished thought from #5. Antelope either slide under or cannot cross, they absolutely never jump a fence, for some weird reason. So, fences along highways are serious barriers. With large herds of antelope in rural areas, crossovers make sense. How many deer, etc would use this thing in SoCal?

Deer will jump a fence if they can see what's on the other side. If it's a board fence, it will keep them on their own side. But we're missing the point here.... California managed to lose $100 mill WITHOUT any Somalis. Wow.

As long as they don't use one penny from federal taxpayers, they can go bankrupt as far as I care. Unfortunately, we are still shoveling money to that failed state, and it needs to stop. It won't stop of course, leeches are leeches and will never go away. It's a beautiful state, but the state's taxpayers can pay for the waste, invasion of illegals and the 'high speed rail' that's only high speed as far as spending money.

This is one boondoggle that I haven't heard of but there seems to be a pattern here. California collects the money but they never seem to finish anything. There is always more money needed. I know, let's raise taxes. I've got it! Put up Bigfoot Crossing signs and charge photographers with out-of-focus cameras by the hour to watch for them. You will make your $100 million in a very short time and not have to milk the taxpayers.

Biden's Department of Education framed the National Parents and Families Engagement Council as a coalition meant to reflect a wide range of parent voices during the post-COVID recovery. “The National Parents and Families Engagement Council will help ensure recovery efforts meet students’ needs.” The internal emails, "obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the U.S. Department of Education (ED)," tell a different story.
