200,000 Immigrant Truck Drivers Set To
Lose CDL Eligibility Amid Safety Crackdown

Original Article

Roughly 200,000 immigrant truck drivers in the United States are set to lose their commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) this week under a new Trump administration rule that went into effect Monday to keep illegal immigrants off the road. Under the rule, non-citizens, including asylum seekers, refugees, and recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), will no longer be eligible to obtain CDLs, even if they are legally authorized to work in the United States. Those who already hold licenses will not be able to renew them when they expire.

Comments:

This regulatory change should not only improve highway safety but also improve wages and working conditions for Americans by stabilizing and re-professionalizing the trucking workforce.

200,000! If you're on the road now, there's a fair chance that the truck drivers traveling along side you have no idea what they're doing.

I was on i77 north out of Charlotte on 3/12. Trucks were 3 across, toes to nose, in miles long stretches, going slow. Apparently those in the left lane were unable to read the signs prohibiting trucks in the left lane. Cutting out 200,000 will be an improvement

I have lived amonst then in their country. The most dangerous part of my existance there was driving. Even if they can read, it doesn't matter to them. They just don't care about others and safety like we do. Even if they have a college degree, they are still dangerous on the road.

Re #5. exactly so. I used to do business in Armenia. One of the scientists I worked with was professor of materials technology, a smart guy, in his 60s. He had a very nice car, especially for Armenia, a couple of years old Mercedes sedan. Nice car. I rode with him in Yerevan traffic many times. He once asked me if I thought he was a "good driver". He wasn't really very good, but what could I say, I thought for a few seconds and said, "I think you are good driver for Armenia, but the driving here is different than I am used to in America." He was pleased, but then a few minutes later said, "I'd rather be a good scientist than a good driver." Well, he got that right. Foreign driving habits are often pretty scary. I was always worried riding in Russia. Russian drivers are nuts. And Indian drivers are a lot worse. We were repeatedly warned to NEVER rent a car in India and drive, by local coworkers of my wife. So, we hired drivers....very cheap, and the recommended ones were pretty safe. Super cheap. Drive you around all day, wait for shopping and tourist attraction visits....sometimes hours...and then pay maybe $6 for the day. We were told that we were overpaying. NOT what you want driving a semi here, especially unable to read road signs. All illegals need to be deported. If you want some entertainment, search on Youtube for "crazy Russian driving". Tons of frightening dash cam videos. Most people have dash cams to protect from widespread insurance fraud. Car backs up into you in traffic, intentionally, and then claims you hit them, they were stopped, whiplash and you owe them money. Dash cams prevent this, so they are common. And they catch the insanity.

Just get ALL the illegals out. Every single one. They have no right to even be here much less unskilled drivers steering 88,000 lb vehicles. The trucking companies hire them because they work cheap and drive over their legal hours. Every owner of a trucking company hiring illegals should be able to be personally sued if one of their illegals is involved in a wreck. They will scream. "But we didn't know they were illegal when they killed 4 people". Tough. It's up to them to make sure they don't hire illegals. Better make sure or take a chance on losing all your assets and maybe face a manslaughter charge. Enough is enough of hiring illegal workers for anything whether it's picking grapes or driving trucks.

This is frightening. To think that 200,000 drivers have been driving up and down our Interstate's at 75 miles an hour without being qualified to drive those massive trucks. A lot of people allowing this have some serious explaining to do.

Over the past couple of years, there has been a significant increase in semi-truck accidents on Colorado highways, especially on I-70 west of Denver. In nearly all cases the accidents were due to poor driver training and lack of skill. And most of the drivers cannot speak or understand English. Sadly, multi-car pileups have been caused by the illegal truck drivers resulting in loss of life of innocent people. The state is cracking down by prohibiting semi-trucks from using the I-70 passing lanes. This helps some, but I'm afraid this is too little too late.

Bianco detailed a stunning mismatch uncovered through an audit of handwritten logs maintained by the Riverside County Registrar of Voters: county records show just 611,428 ballots cast. Yet Secretary of State Shirley Weber certified 657,322 votes to the state -- a gap neither Bonta nor Weber ever publicly questioned or explained.
