A key Senate committee voted 8-7 on Thursday to advance President Donald Trump’s nominee to be the next secretary of the Department of Homeland SecurityThe vote in the Senate Homeland Security Committee sends Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., to the full Senate for consideration one day after a contentious confirmation hearing.

Years ago, Dems rolled out the “top-two” primary system with one assumption baked in for good measure: no matter what happens, two Democrats would likely always make it to the general election. It was supposed to lock in control, sideline Republicans, and keep everything nice and predictable.
And for a while, sure, it worked.
But these kinds of machines only work if your side stays disciplined. You need a clear front-runner, maybe two, and everyone else falls in line.
But that’s not what’s happening now.

California lawmakers said Thursday they planned to change the name of “César Chavez Day” to “Farmworkers Day” after sexual abuse allegations against the late civil rights leader arose earlier this week.
The New York Times reported Wednesday that Chavez had groomed and sexually abused young girls within the labor rights movement while he served as leader of the United Farm Workers Union. One of those women was Dolores Huerta, who co-founded the union with Chavez in 1962.

In 2022, California Gov. Gavin Newsom broke ground on the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing (WAWC), a project featuring an overpass for animals atop ten lanes of the 101 Freeway in Southern California.
