After months of refusing to comply with federal regulations requiring truck drivers to be tested for English language proficiency, California Governor Gavin Newsom is finally reversing course, the United States Department of Transportation confirmed to the Post on Friday. The USDOT withheld over $40 million from the state last October after USDOT Secretary Sean Duffy said California was the only state that failed to enforce the regulations requiring truckers pass a test showing they can communicate in English and understand traffic signs. “I shouldn’t have had to threaten to withhold millions in funding for California to come to their senses and enforce the law,” Duffy told The California Post.

That’s the blessing and the curse of binary decision-making: Unless perfect is on the ballot, whoever the voters choose will have flaws.
It’s a curse for good governance, because it means the process itself is inherently flawed. Its features and bugs are one and the same; it’ll always be an arduous, inefficient, slow-moving system. (Which, in all honesty, is often a positive.)
But it’s a yuuuge blessing for candidates, because having flaws and character defects isn’t fatal.
The State Department on Sunday issued a warning to U.S. citizens in certain parts of Mexico to shelter in place until further notice on account of “ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity.”
The regions listed in the advisory include the Mexican states of Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon. The warning came after the Mexican army killed the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, or “El Mencho,” on Sunday, Mexico’s Ministry of Defense said in a statement on the social platform X.

A young man tried to enter Mar-a-Lago with a shotgun and a can of gasoline at around 1:30 this morning. Early reports indicate that he was challenged by police and the Secret Service and refused to put down his gun. They shot and killed him.
As of this writing, we don’t know the identity of the intruder, but we can be pretty sure we know his motivation–the insane Trump hatred that has been stirred up by the Democratic Party. Newsom attended the opening of the new San Quentin Learning Center, with the goal of “proving that rehabilitation and public safety go hand in hand,” he said at ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday. The center, which features Scandinavian-inspired design, also includes podcast studios, recording spaces and a store “to normalize social and vocational experiences.”
