California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing blowback after unveiling a new $239 million rehabilitation center at the infamous San Quentin prison — complete with a cafe and sweeping views of San Francisco Bay.
Newsom attended the opening of the new San Quentin Learning Center, with the goal of “proving that rehabilitation and public safety go hand in hand,” he said at ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday. The center, which features Scandinavian-inspired design, also includes podcast studios, recording spaces and a store “to normalize social and vocational experiences.”
Critics of the amenity-filled center blasted Newsom for the redesign, saying prisons shouldn’t be cushy.

Ill probably be in the minority here. But, im firmly in favor of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation that proven to be effective at a reasonable cost. Criminals who are repentant deserve a chance for redemption.
Unfortunately...... with liberas in charge, this will be an expensive boondoggle.

And the great majority of the evil men who go into this recreation center will come out as evil men, and will go on to do their evil deeds, completely unchanged by this total waste money. Perhaps 1 out of 1,000 might be changed, and the left will say "see, that's worth it".
My answer, is "No, it's not."
The sad reality is that if a violent sociopath is violent by age 12 or so, he is extremely likely, probably 99.9% to remain a violent danger to others until he dies, from whatever causes. Frequently, they die at the hands of one of their fellow sociopaths, in or out of prison.
How many innocent, normal people must die in the endless replaying of this foolish leftist myth? This has been tried endlessly around the world for centuries. And, by and large, it has been a failure. But, leftists always believe that "This time central planning will WORK, all the other times, they just didn't do it right." And just like that, they imagine, "If you just treat them well, and give them some training, they'll turn into normal, productive citizens."
One in 1,000 might change. The rest will remain violent sociopaths.

Poster #1: You're not in the minority. Rehab is a desired outcome, but given the recidivism rate not everyone can be rehabbed. I suspect there are differences in prisons for 'maybe' prisoners and 'definitely not' prisoners.
Knowing Newsom and California, the money, from wherever he can find it, isn't for prison makeovers.

The northern Central Valley has hundreds of square miles of much cheaper real estate. Why build it on some of the most expensive real estate in California.

Re #1, it's a great movie plot, and definitely everyone deserves a second chance, utby the time they get to San Quentin they are on their 47th chance and 99.9% are not going to 'reh

#11 (and #12!): Take two tablets, call me in the morning (I'll be here all week!)
Another liberal 'great idea', and their unrequited love of criminal bad boys shines through. Never mind the ordinary citizens victimized by dangerous psychopaths over and over. And a podcast facility? Oh good, so these dangerous nutcases can issue threats to whomever they want? Of course, I would be sure to use those podcasts in court against them to lengthen their sentences
