New York City officials are looking to hire 1,000 emergency snow shovelers as a major winter storm moves toward the region. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during a press conference on Saturday that the city is preparing for what could be its most significant snowfall in nearly a decade. “For those who want to do more to help their neighbors and earn some extra cash, you too can become an emergency snow shoveler,” Mamdani said. ”Just show up at your local sanitation garage between 8 am and 1 pm tomorrow with your paperwork,” he added. It’s a curse for good governance, because it means the process itself is inherently flawed. Its features and bugs are one and the same; it’ll always be an arduous, inefficient, slow-moving system. (Which, in all honesty, is often a positive.)
But it’s a yuuuge blessing for candidates, because having flaws and character defects isn’t fatal.
The State Department on Sunday issued a warning to U.S. citizens in certain parts of Mexico to shelter in place until further notice on account of “ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity.”
The regions listed in the advisory include the Mexican states of Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon. The warning came after the Mexican army killed the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, or “El Mencho,” on Sunday, Mexico’s Ministry of Defense said in a statement on the social platform X.
