Consider this a Feel-Good Wednesday story in honor of Christmas Eve, and a testament to a private enterprise that honors and appreciates its customers.
H-E-B is a regional grocery chain headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. In 2025, H-E-B ranked the 5th-largest private company in the U.S. with annual revenues of $49.57 billion. Not too shabby for a concern that only covers parts of Texas and Mexico. This 120-year-old grocer has obviously tapped into their market and found success with their model, but this Christmas, they also tapped into the heart of service in a big way.
On Tuesday, at an H-E-B location in Burleson, TX, the computer system went completely down;

It's been thirty years since I was in Burleson, but that's my memory of how the place was. Merry Christmas all y'all!

Way to go, H.E.B!
I recall a couple of years ago, the computer link for the Food Stamp program at a Walmart in Mansfield, LA failed, and the store manager decided to do a similar goodwill gesture. What happened was that the 'Gimme-Dats' immediately put the word out via cell 'phone, and other Gimme-Dats mobbed the store, checking out full-shopping-cart loads of expensive meats and other valuable food. The meat counter was emptied, and there were long lines at the check-out registers. When the system came back online a couple of hours later, the freeloaders who were still in line simply walked out, leaving their loaded carts in the checkout line.
This, to me, shows the difference between honest working Americans and the Gimme-Dats, who will steal anything they can get away with.
Oh, and here's a link to a condensed version of the Walmart Gimme-Dat story:

My “friend” wants to know how Hizzoner’s goobermint-run grocery stores would handle this situation in New Yawk?

Typical H-E-B.
During hurricane season H-E-B will mobilize disaster relief trucks to sites most drastically hit.

I liked HEB when I lived in Texas. This kind of sounds a little more like Omaha to me, though. God bless 'em.
And Merry Christmas!

Pretty amazing, never been in a HEB, but will try one out the next time I'm in Texas, or wherever else they are.

The store name is not HEB, it is H-E-B as in Aitch Ee Bee. Those are the initials of the founder Harold E. Butt. Started out with one rather tiny store in Kerrville, TX. Kerrville is still the sort of flagship store even though the HQ is now in San Antonio. They expanded the main Kerrville store twice over the 20+ years I lived in the Kerrville area. They also purchased a smaller store from a chain that decided to leave Kerrville. There is also a super Walmart in Kerrville, BTW, so that tells you something about the loyalty of their customer base if they could expand one store and keep another one going with Walmart in the area. They have store brands which are of pretty good quality, but also have the best meat and produce you can usually find. H-E-B has also developed another style of store called a Super H-E-B. They have recently started to expand into neighboring states. Maybe more than you wanted to know about H-E-B, but they are a business that treats their employees well, serves their customers faithfully, and deserves to be praised and highlighted.

What makes people (H-E-B) act this way?
(Hint, hint, What is Christmas?)

I love HEB and wish they would come on over to Louisiana.
I have a funny story about that. My mom went to Baylor when Howard E Butt Jr. was there.
She knew a girl in her dorm who would not date him because her name was Rusty and she would not risk that last name. I wonder if she regrets that, now that HEB has become a huge business?

They also have a warehouse store called "Joe V's Smart Shop." They are the largest grocery store I've ever seen.

Absolutely love H.E.B.! Produce is superior to most other stores in town, and they have many generic food products which are very good, and cheaper than the name brands. Their Mi Tienda products, such as fajitas, salsa, tamales, cheese, etc.,..are particularly good. Also, they compete very well with, or beat, Wal-Mart in pricing of many other products.
We have two H.E.B.s in our town of 65K or so, and I believe there is talk about another being built. No small wonder with such a well run, and generous, company. Merry Christmas, particularly you H.E.B!
